Chapter 12
Saving Her Son from the Cold Cellar
No matter what, she had to prevent that tragedy from happening!
She didn't have time to worry about her bodily pain or the mocking gazes around her. She sprang up from the ground and dashed toward her home.
In the modern world, she had been an orphan, with only a cold, multi-billion fortune left by her parents. She had dedicated her entire life to her studies to the point of exhausting her health.
Yet in the end, she had never experienced any real familial warmth.
Now, she had two children born of her own flesh and blood.
As for that male supporting character, Gu Si, she didn't care much about him. The only thing she wanted was to be by the two children's side, making up for the pain the original host had caused them.
Du Yue Rao silently swore in her heart that she would love and care for her two children well, never letting them suffer again.
She only hoped she was still in time! She immediately picked up her pace.
She ran to the foot of the eastern mountain of the village. A sturdy brick house appeared before her eyes, standing out amidst a cluster of dilapidated mud-brick houses. This was her and Gu Si's home.
Du Yue Rao looked at the faded door god paintings on the gate, took a deep breath, and pushed the door open.
She rushed through the yard and searched the entire house, but there was no sign of the two children.
Memories of the original novel suddenly flooded back, making her heart pound. The novel described Gu Ying Han's tragic plight in detail, but because the original host was busy dating another man at the time, her memory of her son was completely blank.
Just as she was panicking, a heavy thud echoed from the storage cellar.
Du Yue Rao snapped out of it, rushed to open the cellar door, and looked down.
Sure enough, in a dark corner, a small figure was curled up, hugging himself. His face was pale, and his body was shivering uncontrollably; his condition was clearly critical.
It was the older of the twins, Gu Ying Han!
Du Yue Rao's eyes widened as she vaguely pieced together her scattered memories. The original host had found the child's high fever to be an eyesore, so she had locked the four-year-old boy in the cellar!
To prevent the child from climbing up, she had even pulled out the only ladder!
Truly cruel beyond humanity!
Du Yue Rao quickly dragged the ladder over from the side and jumped down into the cellar without hesitation. The cellar was pitch black and bone-chillingly cold. Even an adult like her felt afraid, let alone a severely ill child!
Du Yue Rao's heart felt squeezed.
The little boy was pitifully thin, like an unweaned kitten, yet the original host had been heartless enough to do such a thing!
The boy's eyes were tightly shut, his tiny body dry and terrifyingly thin, wearing only oversized, ill-fitting clothes.
Du Yue Rao carefully stepped closer, her voice trembling as she called her son's nickname.
"Xiao Han, Mommy is here..."
Hearing her voice, Gu Ying Han's body flinched. His large, clear eyes slowly opened, filled with terror.
The boy gritted his teeth and silently backed away. In his eyes, Du Yue Rao was no different from a fierce beast.
In the original novel, although Gu Ying Han's brain was damaged by the high fever, his vocal cords were perfectly fine. Yet, he never spoke a single word for the rest of his life.
The underlying cause was that he had been abused by the original host for years, eventually choosing to close his heart and shut himself off from the world.
Even when locked in the freezing cellar, the boy had not uttered a sound to call for help.
Thinking of this, Du Yue Rao's heart ached even more.
She feared that if she delayed any longer, Xiao Han's condition would worsen, and he would end up simple-minded for life, just like in the story.
Du Yue Rao could not hesitate any longer. She stepped forward and firmly pulled the boy into her arms.
His body was burning hot and feather-light. She quickly took out children's fever-reducing medicine from her space and coaxed him softly.
"Good boy, Xiao Han. Take this medicine, and you won't feel bad anymore."
Xiao Han was too terrified to move. He stiffened in Du Yue Rao's embrace, obediently swallowing the medicine she fed him without any struggle.
He didn't know what his mother was feeding him, but he knew very well that if he resisted, he would only be beaten more severely.
He was afraid of pain.
After administering the medicine, Du Yue Rao held her breath and gently carried Xiao Han up from the cellar.
She had just stepped outside and hadn't even stood firm yet.
A small cannonball of a figure suddenly charged from the side, slamming into her.
"Don't you dare bully my brother!"
The tiny figure charged with all his might, so much so that even an adult like Du Yue Rao couldn't keep her balance and was knocked to the ground.
