Chapter 17
The CEO Becomes a Dog
Zhao Wan Ru's murmur reached Tai Leng Han's ears like a clap of thunder nearby. He abruptly stood up, his thick, long eyebrows furrowing slightly, his voice deepening with clear displeasure:
"You still haven't had breakfast?"
If Zhao Wan Ru could hear Tai Leng Han's inner thoughts, she would have heard his profound self-reproach at that moment. Currently, Tai Leng Han felt truly negligent, careless, and thoughtless. This morning, he had not only fled their home, failing to stay and have breakfast with Zhao Wan Ru; but even now, he had only been thinking of his own pleasure without noticing that she hadn't eaten yet. Zhao Wan Ru didn't suffer from stomach problems, but her blood sugar wasn't very high; if she didn't eat properly, she could feel dizzy, sometimes even faint. Therefore, Tai Leng Han hurriedly pulled Zhao Wan Ru to sit down, right in the spot he had just vacated. His expression remained stiff and cold, his voice stern as if giving an order:
"Then quickly eat something. Later, Fang Xie He will bring in some milk and nutritional nuts; remember to finish them all."
Zhao Wan Ru softly pursed her lips, her heart warming as she recognized the hidden concern behind her "iceberg's" stiff, cold demeanor. Conversely, Tai Leng Han's heart grew colder and colder as he saw Zhao Wan Ru still hesitating to touch her breakfast. Perhaps his presence in the room made her uncomfortable. Or perhaps, his unpleasant face made her feel disgusted, nauseous, unable to swallow? Tai Leng Han dared not think further, quickly cleared his throat, and found an excuse for himself:
"You… just sit here and eat slowly. I… will go to the meeting room for a bit."
With that, Tai Leng Han retreated a few steps, intending to turn and leave the room. But his feet had barely lifted a few times before they froze, stiff. Because Zhao Wan Ru had weakly spoken:
"You… don't want to eat with me?"
Huh? What? Tai Leng Han was stunned. What was Zhao Wan Ru saying? Did she want him to eat breakfast with her? Seeing Tai Leng Han's back, stiff as if turned to stone, Zhao Wan Ru felt both amused and sympathetic. She sniffled, feigning a pitiful expression, and mumbled to herself:
"I… I accidentally cooked too much. I can't possibly finish it all by myself. It would be such a waste to leave food uneaten. Should I try to eat it all? But then I'd burst. But… no one wants to eat with me…"
Zhao Wan Ru hadn't even finished mumbling the lines she'd just thought of when Tai Leng Han turned back. He stood directly in front of Zhao Wan Ru, seriously denying and correcting her:
"That's not it!"
"Huh? Not what?"
Zhao Wan Ru, her line "stolen," looked up blankly. Meeting Tai Leng Han's stern expression, she was momentarily startled. This foolish iceberg wasn't angry, was he?
Tai Leng Han was indeed angry. He wouldn't tolerate anyone showing disdain for Zhao Wan Ru, not even if she disliked herself. Taking a deep breath, suppressing the surging emotions in his heart, Tai Leng Han sullenly added:
"It's not that no one wants to eat with you. It's not that I don't want to eat with you. I… I just feared that if you saw me, you would…"
Tai Leng Han had spoken a little too freely, hastily cutting off his sentence, swallowing the words "feel nauseous and unable to swallow" back into his stomach, then clamping his mouth shut. Zhao Wan Ru's face darkened. She didn't need to hear his inner thoughts to guess that her "foolish iceberg" was definitely overthinking and looking down on himself again. Nevertheless, Zhao Wan Ru was very sensible and didn't press the issue. She didn't want to delve deeper into Tai Leng Han's negative mood. Her immediate task was to make him happily eat breakfast with her. So Zhao Wan Ru said quickly in a soft voice:
"Then quickly sit down and eat with me. This dish won't taste good if it gets cold."
Relieved, Tai Leng Han swiftly reached for the chair near the door, pulling Fang Xie He's familiar armchair next to the CEO's desk, and obediently sat down. The desk already held a computer and several stacks of documents, leaving only a small space in front of Zhao Wan Ru, just enough for the insulated food container. Zhao Wan Ru, however, didn't want Tai Leng Han to have to hold the food by hand. Thus, a remarkably heartwarming scene unfolded in the CEO's office of Sheng Li Group: The CEO of Sheng Li Group, renowned for his coldness and decisiveness, was sitting tucked away at one side of his desk, letting a young woman nearly ten years his junior feed him mouthfuls of bread, no different from a large dog waiting for its owner to be fed.
