Chapter 18
Overprotective?
Fang Xie He was so annoyed he wanted to stomp his foot. But he didn't dare risk opening his mouth to remind him. Just now, he had only blurted out a compliment to Zhao Wan Ru in front of Tai Leng Han and had already been hit with his "killing intent." If Fang Xie He spoke again now, the consequences would be unimaginable.
But with the heart of a sincere friend and a dedicated assistant, Fang Xie He couldn't just stand by and watch Tai Leng Han miss an opportunity to deepen his affection with his wife. The talented assistant's brain quickly processed the situation. Immediately after, Fang Xie He turned his back, pulled out his phone, rapidly typed a message, and quickly sent it to Tai Leng Han's number.
The phone in Tai Leng Han's pocket vibrated twice, signaling a new message. Tai Leng Han took out his phone to check. When he saw Fang Xie He's name as the sender, Tai Leng Han involuntarily looked up at the person standing near the door. Tai Leng Han was a bit confused. Was Fang Xie He overflowing with money, time, or effort that he would text him when they were clearly under the same roof, just a few steps apart?
Fang Xie He looked away towards the door, pretending not to notice his boss's curious and disdainful gaze. Hmph, he had gone to such lengths for his friend, only to be looked at with such an expressive gaze by the very friend he was trying so hard to help. Fang Xie He felt both wronged and aggrieved.
Receiving no response from his best friend and capable associate, Tai Leng Han had no choice but to read Fang Xie He's message. He didn't look, but once he did, Tai Leng Han found it somewhat exasperating. Fang Xie He's message read: "Quickly say something to sister-in-law. Something like -I promise to take you through life- or -I will guide you through life- hurry and say it."
Tai Leng Han felt both touched and a little self-conscious, his brows furrowing slightly. Was Fang Xie He trying to remind him to express his feelings to Zhao Wan Ru? Was he so bad that he needed someone to remind him how to express himself to his wife? And the one reminding him was the most honest person in their group of friends. Tai Leng Han felt his face flush. He knew Fang Xie He meant well, but he also felt embarrassed and awkward with Zhao Wan Ru if he had to utter such prompted declarations of affection.
Therefore, the clever lines that Fang Xie He had struggled to remember and "summarize" to "share his experience" with his comrade remained stuck in Tai Leng Han's throat, unable to be uttered. And while Fang Xie He was both anxious and annoyed, Zhao Wan Ru stumbled again. Tai Leng Han immediately reacted, reaching out to grab Zhao Wan Ru's arm, steadying her. Immediately after, his thick brows furrowed again, full of displeasure. He muttered:
"Why are your hands so cold?"
In truth, Zhao Wan Ru didn't feel cold at all. Her skin was naturally cool. Moreover, they were still indoors, and her hand was held by Tai Leng Han's rough but warm hand; there was no chill whatsoever. Seeing Tai Leng Han's worried expression, Zhao Wan Ru's heart felt like a freshly baked cake, warm and soft. She gently reassured him:
"It's okay. I don't feel cold."
Tai Leng Han still wouldn't let it go. He said sternly:
"No. It's gotten cold these past few days. And you just got over being sick the other day. You can't get cold."
With that, Tai Leng Han walked to the coat rack, took his own bulky overcoat, and immediately draped it over Zhao Wan Ru's bare shoulders. Tai Leng Han's actions were swift and continuous, giving Zhao Wan Ru no time to react or object. "Hey, isn't that a bit overprotective?" Zhao Wan Ru was about to open her mouth when she saw Tai Leng Han's furrowed brows, still showing traces of worry. His eyes were fixed on her, as if checking if she was warm enough. Suddenly, Zhao Wan Ru remembered a cheesy line she had once read somewhere: "Only an overprotective man can truly care for you." Moreover, although Zhao Wan Ru hadn't truly felt cold earlier, being wrapped entirely in the coat, which still carried Tai Leng Han's warmth and scent, made her feel incredibly comfortable. Therefore, she couldn't utter a single word of protest.
Even so, Zhao Wan Ru felt a little regretful. She had painstakingly chosen and spent a lot of time thinking to select this seductive dress. But now she was wrapped in a thick, bulky coat, no different from a zongzi. Wasn't that a waste of the dress's beauty?
