Chapter 10
Meng Yu's Plea
The female ghost saw that the three Old Fishermen dared to contradict her and angrily cursed, "Aren't you also here for a few dead fish, not even running from a ghost!"
Old Fisherman: "However you think about it, you're still more boring..."
"You're the boring one!"
The three Old Fishermen and a female ghost thus fell into an elementary school-like argument, with no clear winner. Because the argument was too heated, the Old Fishermen hadn't even had time to lift their fishing rods.
Qi Gu truly couldn't stand it and pointed at the female ghost, saying, "You, go reincarnate now."
Then he looked at the three Old Fishermen: "Pull up your rods."
Under Qi Gu's command, the scene finally quieted down. The female ghost, still unsatisfied, glared at the three Old Fishermen, then finally went to reincarnate.
The three Old Fishermen were extremely focused. The three of them held their fishing rods together, simultaneously exerting force, but even with all their strength, they couldn't lift the rods at all. In fact... the float was even pulled underwater by the fish.
"It really is a big fish!" Old Fisherman number one rubbed his hands, eager to try.
"Hehehehe, this trip was truly worth it," the second man licked his lips and swallowed.
The third man, who had persistently held his position from the beginning, said, "Isn't this all thanks to me, who would rather be tormented by a ghost than let go? Otherwise, this fish would have definitely run away with my fishing rod."
Mu Xing Shen looked at Qi Gu and cautiously asked, "Master, Master, are they really catching fish? Or something else? Should we stop them?"
Qi Gu said indifferently, "What it is, we'll know when they pull it up."
Mu Xing Shen: "...That's true. Anyway, whatever they pull up, you can handle it."
There was not a hint of flattery in Mu Xing Shen's words; it all came from his genuine feelings.
On the other side, the three Old Fishermen shone their flashlights intensely onto the ink-black water, trying to see what was truly beneath. But it was too dark around them; the light shining on the water could only illuminate a very small area, unable to reveal anything clearly underwater.
"Come on, come on, let's try to pull together again." In front of the big fish, the group of old fishermen was incredibly persistent and tenacious.
"One, two, three!" The three shouted the slogan and pulled together.
For some reason, this time, the tip of the fishing rod became very light, very light. As soon as the three exerted a little force, a silver monster fish, about the length of an arm, immediately jumped out of the ink-black water, hanging on the hook.
"Hey, what kind of fish is this? So small, yet so strong?" Old Fisherman number one asked strangely, instinctively removing the fish from the hook and putting it into the fish bucket. Everyone gathered around the bucket, carefully observing.
Qi Gu and Mu Xing Shen also leaned closer.
They saw that the fish's entire body was covered in scales that shimmered with a silver light, like flowing silk. Its tail fins were like layers of irregular long and short skirts, fluttering and agile... It was a very beautiful fish, but looking at it, everyone inexplicably felt that this fish was truly bizarre and disharmonious.
Mu Xing Shen also noticed this point. He retreated in fright: "Master, its, its eyes!"
Qi Gu remained in his relaxed squatting posture in front of the fish bucket, even poking his fingertip into the water. His expression showed no fear, he only said, "You're quite sharp; you didn't discover it too late."
"This kind of fish is called Meng Yu. It's a type of monster fish born without eyes. Because it has no eyes, its kind most craves to obtain eyes and will stop at nothing. These eyes of its must have been obtained from some human," Qi Gu stared at the Meng Yu's beautiful, delicate eyes, which still carried a childish innocence. These eyes must have belonged to a child.
The Old Fishermen suddenly heard such cold words and were so scared that they abruptly fell backward, simultaneously covering their eyes, fearing that this fish would suddenly jump up and snatch their eyes.
"Master, quickly think of a way! I'm willing to donate another 5 years of charity rice!" Old Fisherman number one shouted.
He had a factory at home, with annual profits of about a million. He was a genuine factory young master, which was why he had free time every day to leisurely go night fishing.
The second man also said, "I'll add more!"
The third man quickly followed suit.
Qi Gu nodded: "Very good, you all have great benevolence. I thank you on behalf of those children first."
"However... this fish probably has no ill intentions."
"Yes, I have no ill intentions; I just want to ask for your help." The chirping of insects, the gentle sound of water flowing by the reservoir, and the rustling of reeds all quieted down at this moment.
The Meng Yu spoke, emitting a lively and innocent sound, like a mischievous little girl.
"You humans always say one thing and mean another. Just now you were desperately fishing, and now that I've voluntarily bitten the hook, you're so scared," Meng Yu complained, looking at the three Old Fishermen, "Truly, Lord Ye Loves Fish!"
"That, that's called Lord Ye Loves Dragons," Mu Xing Shen corrected.
He truly hadn't expected that he, an experienced fish, would one day be correcting an idiom for another fish.
"Nonsense, it's Lord Ye Loves Fish!" Meng Yu proudly raised its head slightly, its big, beautiful eyes with long eyelashes wide and spirited, "This is what Shui Shui taught me. I remember it very clearly. You must not have listened carefully in class, that's why you misremembered!"
Mu Xing Shen was stunned by its confident tone and actually began to doubt if he had misremembered.
Meng Yu saw his guilt and became even more smug, spinning around in the fish bucket and blowing bubbles.
After spinning once, it looked towards Qi Gu, the only one still daring to squat by the edge of the bucket, appearing bolder than the others: "Big brother, can you help me? As long as you're willing to help, I can voluntarily offer a part of my body for you to eat. You know I'm a Meng Yu, so you must also know that after eating me, one can gain clear sight, and vision will become very good."
There was a hint of excitement in its voice, trying its best to make its benefits sound appealing.
"My ordinary vision is good; I don't like eating fish," Qi Gu said coldly.
Meng Yu didn't give up, looking towards the Old Fisherman wearing glasses: "What about you, old man?"
The Old Fisherman clutched his head: "I swear I'll never eat fish again, oh oh oh oh!"
Meng Yu finally looked towards Mu Xing Shen, obviously finding him foolish and not very reliable: "What about you?"
"My vision is also very good. So what exactly do you want us to help with?" Mu Xing Shen asked.
"My little owner, Shui Shui, is under the reservoir. She's trapped in a very large, very heavy iron safe. I, alone as a fish, can't save her. Can you help me?" Meng Yu said.
"You mean, there's a little girl under the reservoir?!" The three Old Fishermen no longer clutched their heads, their faces filled with shock.
Meng Yu saw that they were willing to pay attention to it and hastily said, "Yes, yes! As long as you can save her, you can stew me with braised pork belly or boil me, either is fine!"
Old Fisherman number one anxiously said, "Did it just sink? Why didn't we see it... The safe must be quite airtight. Maybe the person can still be saved. Should we dive down and check first?"
The three Old Fishermen were addicted to fishing and had previously enrolled in diving classes to conveniently check the amount of fish in the water.
"Okay, okay, okay, all three of us will go down together, it'll also be convenient to look out for each other." The three quickly stripped down to their swim trunks, released Meng Yu into the reservoir, and let it lead the way.
Three large ripples appeared on the water's surface and then disappeared.
Mu Xing Shen anxiously looked at the water: "Master, do you think they can save the person? If only I knew how to dive too."
Qi Gu closed his eyes, saying nothing.
After a loud splash, three heads and an iron safe as large as a bedside table simultaneously emerged from the water. The safe was already corroded by rust, covered in mud snails, algae, and dirt.
That was clearly not the state of a safe that had just been thrown in.
A chill ran down their spines. Everyone belatedly realized — this chest must have been gathering dust at the bottom of the reservoir for many, many years.
The little girl inside naturally no longer had any chance of survival.
