Chapter 49
Coming to the Door
"I really must thank that helpful young man!"
Even the low twenty-degree setting of the air conditioner couldn't chase away the sweat on the temples of the assistant in the suit and leather shoes.
Likely due to a lingering fright, his face now bore an unusually pale complexion, as if he hadn't just taken the elevator downstairs but had instead plummeted from a height of several hundred meters before bouncing right back up.
Of course, for a newly hired assistant accompanying the chairman to meet a client, having such an incident occur while handling things alone was indeed a major problem.
Jiang Zhuo glanced up at him. Offering no comment on his panic, he merely waved his hand for the assistant to sit down.
Just a few seconds later, the elegant middle-aged man nodded apologetically to Zheng Yunni, who was sitting opposite him.
—His gesture implied that his subordinate's panic was indeed laughable, while also seizing the moment the assistant sat down to ensure he didn't notice anything amiss.
Protecting the self-esteem of his panicked subordinate while simultaneously apologizing to the client opposite him—this man was highly skilled in social graces, handling the situation flawlessly.
Yet Jiang Zhuo didn't intend to let the matter slide completely. After all, he couldn't just pretend he didn't know his car had been broken into—even if he could remain calm and unbothered, he still needed some sort of countermeasure.
"So, have you called the police yet?"
On the other side of the wall, Shao Zi and Du Yingjian exchanged a glance, sharing a rare moment of silent agreement as the exact same thought crossed their minds:
As if you aren't already well-acquainted with the police.
Calling the police was their first move. Yet the person in power was someone whose standing was rather ambiguous in the eyes of the top brass of the Yuzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau due to an old case of special significance. It really made for a highly ironic situation.
Meanwhile, the person sitting opposite Jiang Zhuo was clearly completely unaware of these deep and unusual undercurrents, despite her own extraordinary status as a direct descendant of a former high-ranking official of the Yuzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau.
Zheng Yunni wore a serious expression. "This cannot be taken lightly. I've been to the Tower Center parking lot before; the security there is quite decent. Someone specifically targeting Chairman Jiang's car is likely not a coincidence. If there's indeed a security breach, we might need to check the surveillance footage—Xiao Liu, contact President Wang first and have him notify the security department of this Tower Center area."
Compared to the old Director Zheng, who had been amiable with his subordinates in his youth and occasionally humorous after rising to power, this lady could be described as his complete polar opposite.
While most front-line criminal detectives learned from their bitter experiences and privately wished for their children not to follow in their footsteps, the old Director Zheng had been different.
He possessed great political awareness and passed his aspirations down to his children. When Zheng Yunni was only a teenager, he believed that his sharp, intelligent, and remarkably steady daughter would surely become a legendary detective and achieve great things in the future.
As it turned out, Zheng Yunni didn't become a police officer, but she did indeed build a successful career elsewhere—perhaps because her entrance exam scores for the police academy were embarrassingly low, and she herself didn't have such a deep obsession. She ended up majoring in finance at a prestigious university and went abroad before even graduating.
Nevertheless, having grown up in a police household, Zheng Yunni was still considered a model law-abiding citizen. Not only that, but by stepping in to help Jiang Zhuo look into the surveillance footage, her sense of justice was fully on display.
This was going to be tricky.
Shao Zi frowned. Just as he began trying to recall which district the nearby police station belonged to and whether they might dispatch officers he knew, he heard the assistant inside the room, who had finally composed himself, speak up.
"Chairman Jiang, there's no need to rush. The young man who helped me subdue the thief seemed to be a police officer! He showed his badge and said he would take the suspect to the nearby security first. By now, everything that needs to be investigated should already be clear, right?"
The assistant still seemed quite hesitant, suddenly realizing he might have returned a bit too quickly and could have just followed the officer to handle it. On the other side of the wall, Shao Zi felt his scalp go even tumber than the assistant's.
