The Canary's Escape Plan

Who Is He?

Chapter 16

Who Is He?

Shang Xing saw the Flying Wing for the first time with his own eyes. It was a colossal flying vessel, crafted purely from refined steel, its hull shaped like a teardrop, adorned with various sharp, blade-like spikes, and inlaid with Black Obsidian. The light from the Black Obsidian glittered under the sun, creating an enchanting appearance.

It was truly a flying vessel both beautiful and dangerous; such a thing could never exist in the desolate lands of the Old World.

Dozens of people boarded the Flying Wing. An hour later, the Flying Wing hovered in mid-air, no longer advancing, but stopping at a strategic position from which the entire New World could be observed.

Directly beneath the Flying Wing was a plaza even larger than the docking square they had just left. In the center of the plaza stood a colossal sculpted statue. Due to the great distance, its features were unclear, but from its magnificent bronze form, one could discern it was a male figure, solemn and dignified.

The Flying Wing hovered for a moment before beginning its descent.

After landing, they disembarked from the Flying Wing. A strong wind swept across the plaza, but the statue remained motionless. As they approached, Shang Xing finally saw the sculpture's form clearly.

It was an angel, with flowing hair, deep features, and a majestic bearing. In its hand, the sculpture held a precious sword, but it was a broken bronze sword, covered in cracks, as if a mere gust of wind would shatter it. Yet, despite the ravaging wind, it did not crumble.

"Who is he?" Shang Xing couldn't help but ask Xi Chang.

Xi Chang, of course, didn't know and merely shook his head. A Priest standing nearby overheard and whispered, "He is the 'Holy Son.' But the Holy Son is dead; the people of the New World carved this statue in his memory."

"The people of the New World once cast a statue of the Holy Son in pure gold, but in less than half a year, the gold turned into dull bronze. In less than a year, the sculpture would disintegrate on its own, crumbling no matter where it was placed."

The Priest continued with a hint of mockery, "'The Holy Son' was the first Artificial God of the New World, yet he died, and died miserably. Not only that, but the statues carved to commemorate him always crumble and fall apart." His tone was full of contempt.

Shang Xing looked back at the statue, vaguely seeing layers of wounds on its body. Would this statue, like the Artificial God 'Holy Son,' eventually crumble and perish?

The Priest's words, though soft, were still heard by a Red-Robed Angel. A Red-Robed Angel wearing a golden mask fiercely kicked the Priest. The force of the kick was immense, seemingly intended to take his life directly. The Priest couldn't dodge in time and was sent flying to the ground.

The Red-Robed Angel pointed and cursed, "You lowly reptiles, how dare you insult the 'Holy Son'? You seek death!"

The Priest's face turned ashen. Shang Xing quickly helped him up; the Priest's body trembled, his lips purple, and his knees were already soaked with blood.

The Red-Robed Angel was still not appeased. He drew a leather whip from his waist and lashed it fiercely towards the Priest. The whip carried a violent gust of wind. The Priest couldn't evade and, struck by a single lash, spat out blood, his face contorted in pain.

Shang Xing angrily shouted, "What are you doing!"

The Red-Robed Angel sneered, "Doing what? I am teaching you reptiles a lesson for daring to secretly gossip about our 'Holy Son.'"

With that, the whip aimed directly at Shang Xing. Xi Chang quickly pulled Shang Xing back, continuously apologizing. The Red-Robed Angel glanced at Shang Xing a few times, then redirected his whip to lash the Priest again. The red whip struck his skin, burning hot. The Priest gritted his teeth and endured, not uttering a single plea for mercy.

Shang Xing opened his mouth, intending to raise his hand to stop this brutal act, but Xi Chang held his arm tightly, shaking his head slightly.

It was because he had asked that question that the Priest answered and was whipped. What could he do to stop this Red-Robed Angel?

He observed the other Red-Robed Angels, and even the staff of Zhi Shan Company; all stood by coldly, watching this execution, completely indifferent.

How could he protect the Priest?

Xi Chang shielded Shang Xing, ordering, "Don't show yourself."

The Priest, who held high prestige in the Old World, had many people step forward to protect him; some even tried to snatch the whip from the Red-Robed Angel's hand.

"Indeed, they are the people of hell; their base nature can never be shed." A Zhi Shan Company staff member said with disgust.

The situation immediately turned violent. All the Red-Robed Angels drew their weapons, glaring at everyone like tigers stalking their prey. Without a word, they brandished their weapons and charged at those protecting the Priest. In an instant, killing intent filled the plaza, blades and swords clashed, and the pungent smell of blood permeated the air.

The people of the Old World, frail in body and unarmed, attacked without discipline. Coupled with their deep-seated fear of the New World and the Red-Robed Angels, they were completely overwhelmed.

They were quickly suppressed.

The Red-Robed Angel whipped with increasing fervor, each lash striking the Priest's body until he spat blood, his entire body trembling violently.

Still not appeased, the Red-Robed Angel handed another whip to one of the Old World people who had just been suppressed, forcing that person to whip the Priest.

The person trembled as he took the whip, his body already covered in wounds, not daring to act. Another Red-Robed Angel raised a long blade; a cold light flashed, and blood splattered onto Shang Xing's face. A head rolled to Shang Xing's feet, still emitting a mournful, agonizing cry. Even though the head was severed from the neck, he was not entirely dead; the sorrowful wailing continued, while the headless body staggered and then collapsed to its knees.

"Smack!"

Another whip lashed down onto the headless corpse on the ground.

The body was battered beyond recognition, flesh and blood splattering everywhere.

This cruelty sent shivers down one's spine; this was the complete trampling of the Old World by the New World.

Shang Xing's eyes widened. He finally understood. It wasn't because the Priest discussed the "Holy Son" that the Red-Robed Angel became enraged. In reality, it didn't matter who was being abused; they simply wanted to torment the people of the Old World to flaunt their status.

Xi Chang tightly shielded Shang Xing, ensuring he suffered no harm. But the other people of the Old World were all more or less injured, especially those who had stepped forward to protect the Priest; their wounds were unbearable to look at.

The Red-Robed Angel continued to lash the headless corpse. The Priest finally opened his eyes, a cold light flashing within them, but what could he do against such an overwhelming disparity in power?

Perhaps his decision was wrong; they shouldn't have come to the New World. But then again, what good was it to stay in the Old World?

Neither was good. No matter what they did, their suffering would not lessen.

The Priest took a deep breath, his voice strained, "It is true that your 'Holy Son' is dead; is that not even allowed to be spoken?"

The Red-Robed Angel stopped, looking at the Priest with a cold sneer: "That is indeed true. Our God has always been by our side, while your God abandoned you long ago."

The New World had chosen three Artificial Gods. The first, the 'Holy Son,' had died, but they still had two others, and both had the potential to become God.

"Moreover, before long, our 'Holy Son' will be resurrected," a Zhi Shan Company staff member said proudly.

The Red-Robed Angel glanced at the staff member, joy evident in his eyes beneath the mask. He broke free from his murderous frenzy and imperiously commanded, "Your 'God' of the Old World threatened and harmed the 'Holy Son' of the New World. You people of hell must kneel before the Holy Son's statue to atone for your 'God'!"

Atonement again... Shang Xing recalled hearing about atoning for 'God' from the Priest's mouth last time.

He was extremely curious, who exactly was their 'God'?

"Still not kneeling?!" The leader of the Red-Robed Angels roared.

The other Red-Robed Angels immediately understood, kicking the legs of the Old World people, forcing everyone to kneel.

The Priest's legs had long lost sensation; he lay sprawled on the ground, his eyes revealing immense pain.

Except for Xu Yuan Feng and her husband, who hadn't arrived, everyone else was present. The Holy Rings bestowed by the Red-Robed Angels had lost their effectiveness a year ago, and they hadn't provided any more. Their situation grew increasingly difficult, which was why they all had to seek out the New World.

The Old World tormented them, causing such profound suffering that they were on the verge of collapse. Thus, they placed their last hope here, yearning for the New World to be their salvation.

But after setting foot here, they realized that the New World might just be the beginning of even more catastrophic misfortunes.
