Chapter 20
Grilling Beef
Returning to the cave, Lin Ye pointed to the stove she had just built today and said, "Tonight we will grill beef here."
Earlier this evening, when Yang returned and saw this strange object, he didn't know what it was for. He asked, "How can you grill meat with this?"
Lin Ye smiled. "You'll see in a moment."
She suddenly remembered she had no oil and asked, "Yang, do you have any oil?"
Yang shook his head. "No."
"Then can you go get me a piece of pork fat? Not much, just a small piece."
Although he didn't know what Lin Ye wanted pork fat for, he still nodded and said, "Alright."
He had only taken a few steps when Lin Ye called him back. "Wait a moment." She took several pieces of beef from her basket and handed them to him. "We should trade with others; we can't take advantage of them."
Unconsciously, she had placed Yang in the position of "we."
Lin Ye finished lighting the fire in the stove, then placed a stone slab on top to heat it. The next step was to marinate the beef.
First, she cut cinnamon and perilla into small pieces. The cinnamon flavor was quite strong, so a small piece was enough. Then she put them all into a lunch box, sprinkled in some salt, added a few spoonfuls of beef paste, and mixed well. A simple sauce was finished.
Using beef paste to grill beef—she was very meticulous about it.
This was also the first time Lin Ye had used these ingredients to make a sauce, so she wasn't sure about the taste, but she thought that no matter how bad it was, it would surely be better than that half-raw, half-burnt roasted meat.
She put the thinly sliced beef into the sauce to marinate and absorb the flavor. Once the stone slab was hot enough, they could start grilling. She tested the stone slab with her hand, feeling the heat radiating from it, and decided the preheating was almost done.
At that moment, Yang returned with a piece of pork fat about the size of a palm. Lin Ye smiled and said, "You've returned just in time; we can prepare to grill the meat."
Yang gave her the pork fat, then sat to one side watching her grill. He saw her place a thin stone slab on the object called a "stove," which had a large fire inside. He seemed to understand; she wanted to use the heat of the stone to cook the meat.
After understanding, Yang felt her method was absolutely wonderful. When their tribe roasted meat, they always just stuck the meat on a wooden stick and placed it directly over the fire. If they didn't control the flames well, the meat would easily char. Grilling on a stone slab wasn't like that; since there was a layer of stone, the meat wouldn't burn easily.
He felt he could consider popularizing this method of grilling for the entire tribe.
Lin Ye used a knife to slice the pork fat, then placed the slices onto the heated stone slab. The fat was plump, and as soon as it touched the hot stone, it made a "sizzling" sound, and the lard gradually began to melt.
Before long, the thinly sliced pork fat turned a golden color, and the aroma of meat began to waft out.
Yang was already very hungry, and now, hearing and smelling this fragrance, his stomach couldn't help but growl loudly. His face turned red, and he hurriedly covered his stomach.
Lin Ye was so close to Yang that she naturally heard his stomach growling. But she didn't show any unusual reaction, which made Yang silently breathe a sigh of relief.
Lin Ye took a salt container and sprinkled a bit onto the pork fat, then picked up the pieces and put them into a clean lunch box.
She handed the lunch box to Yang. "Eat some of this first to line your stomach." She didn't give him chopsticks; seeing Jing's performance today, she knew beastmen didn't know how to use them.
Yang had long been waiting to eat meat. As soon as he received the lunch box, he couldn't wait to pick up the meat with his hands. The meat was freshly grilled and very hot; he huffed and puffed as he ate.
The fresh wild pork fat was not greasy; just adding salt for seasoning was enough. The outer layer of the fat was grilled to be fragrant and crispy, and most of the fat had been rendered into oil. Taking a bite, it was delicious without being cloying—truly incredibly fragrant.
Very quickly, Yang had eaten more than half the pork fat in the lunch box. Suddenly, he remembered that Lin Ye still hadn't eaten and stopped. As an elite beastman, how could he eat alone while the female was still hungry? Especially when the female was working hard to grill meat for him...
Thinking of this, he felt like a scoundrel. He pursed his lips and pushed the lunch box back to her. "How about you eat some first?"
"No need." Lin Ye shook her head. "I don't like eating pork fat."
Pork fat was so delicious; how could anyone not like it!
Surely it was because she wanted to let him have the fat that she said that. He remembered when he was a child, his mother had also tricked him like that, saying she didn't like eating meat.
Thinking of that, he firmly pushed the lunch box into Lin Ye’s hand. "You eat it; I've had enough."
Lin Ye looked suspiciously at the remaining half of the pork fat in the box. For a person who could eat five kilograms of meat in one meal, how could he be full after eating just this little bit of fat?
"I really don't eat pork fat; you finish these pieces."
"You eat them!"
"I'm not eating..."
The two kept pushing the lunch box back and forth. Lin Ye couldn't help but burst out laughing; looking at them like this was truly a bit silly.
