Chapter 33
The Stalemate
"DO NOT RETREAT!" Seeing their side losing formation, the Great Li Five Hundred Commander roared in fury.
The soldiers were jolted awake by this shout and no longer retreated, instead regrouping into their original formation to fight back.
"Hmph!" The West Mountain Five Hundred Commander saw the stalemate return and glared unhappily at the enemy commander.
Both sides looked at each other, identifying a common goal: they had to kill the opponent's commander.
*Boom!* Suddenly, a massive sound startled the West Mountain Five Hundred Commander. The soldiers surrounding the Great Li Five Hundred Commander were tossed aside as if by a flood, their armor shattered, bleeding from their seven orifices, dead as could be.
Two massive great hammers, with every swing, sent enemy soldiers flying with an immense force. Even men and horses were not spared. Everyone looked closely and saw a youth who appeared frail but had a crazed expression, carrying two great hammers larger than his own body.
Li Xin's eyes were red from the slaughter. Even Zheng Donglin hadn't expected that such terrifying strength was hidden within that frail body.
"Ah, you seek death!" the enemy commander was enraged, staring wide-eyed at Li Xin. Every soldier crushed was a man under his command. Seeing his men die like that, he was beyond furious.
The Five Hundred Commander swung his sword at Li Xin's head, but the latter easily struck back. Feeling his sword-hand go numb, the Five Hundred Commander's face darkened to the point it seemed it might drip water.
"Die! Die! Die!" Li Xin roared crazily, his two great hammers relentlessly smashing toward the Five Hundred Commander.
The Five Hundred Commander struggled to defend. Though the opponent's attacks were simple, the immense force contained within was heaven-shaking. If he were hit by just one hammer, he would surely be crushed into pulped meat.
The Five Hundred Commander defended for a while until his internal organs could no longer take it; he spat out a mouthful of blood, his face turning pale as he bit his lip to stay calm.
*Neigh!* Suddenly, the horse beneath him cried out in pain. After carrying the Five Hundred Commander and being repeatedly struck by Li Xin's great hammers, its leg bones had shattered and pierced through the skin. Its four legs collapsed.
"No!" The Five Hundred Commander lost his balance and fell to the ground, looking in horror at Li Xin, who was exhaling white mist, his eyes bright red as if wanting to eat him alive.
The great hammer was about to swing down and crush him when the Great Li soldiers reacted, rushing to the rescue and swinging their swords down.
Li Xin casually swung one hammer to the side, and the man and horse were instantly turned into a pool of blood. The other hammer swung down, and the enemy Five Hundred Commander was crushed from the head down, his bones shattered.
"That person..." The West Mountain Five Hundred Commander stood frozen in shock, then suddenly shouted: "Entire army, advance!"
...
"Break the formation!" the West Mountain soldiers shouted, the troop advancing deep into the Great Li front lines.
"Die!" The Great Li soldiers were no ordinary lot; they lined up in rows, creating a solid wall of shields that blocked their vision.
The West Mountain soldiers were advancing eagerly when they suddenly saw a giant wall blocking their sight. In that moment of confusion, they were pierced by countless long spears from the enemy, blood flowing profusely.
"Keep advancing!" The West Mountain soldiers behind them saw this but did not flinch, charging crazily, wanting to use their numbers to shatter the enemy's formation.
*Boom!* More and more soldiers fell, but the Great Li wall did not budge. The Hundred Man Commander's face was grim.
"Open a path for me!" Zheng Donglin, riding the Green Ox, shouted. Liang followed behind, squinting one eye; every arrow he fired took a life, piercing through the Great Li wall and creating a weak point above.
The Green Ox used all its strength to charge into that weak point. The enemy soldiers only had time to fill the gap with their bodies, unable to withstand the Green Ox's charge.
With a lethal strike from the Green Ox, the Great Li formation shattered. Zheng Donglin unleashed his palm techniques, his dragon-shaped True Qi wildly shredding the enemy lines.
Cheng Xiu's figure was like lightning, gliding through the enemy ranks. The wooden sword in his hand had turned bright red after drinking blood. He used the wooden sword to sever enemy wrists, and when the opponent fell, he followed with a strike that took their head.
"If we want the battle to tilt in our favor, we must kill the enemy commander!" Su Dongliu shouted.
"Open a path to their commander!" Ding Boling nodded.
"Cavalry, form the Divine Crossbow formation, pierce the enemy lines!" The Five Hundred Commander recognized the situation and immediately gave the most advantageous order for his side.
A row of cavalry gathered, lining up straight like an arrow fired from a divine crossbow, charging directly into the enemy formation.
"Advance!" Zheng Donglin shouted, leading the cavalry. The Overlord Spear in his hand hacked, stabbed, and swept, wreaking havoc among the enemy.
"Lord Wang Bi, the situation at the front lines has taken a turn for the better," a scout knelt and reported.
"I didn't expect the front lines to do so well. I initially intended for them to be cannon fodder to stall the Great Li soldiers, giving our elite troops time to take the enemy general's head," Wang Bi said plainly, his hands behind his back.
"My Lord is brilliant; heaven is also favoring our West Mountain," the scout nodded.
"It's too early to conclude. The enemy has not yet unleashed their full strength. Don't forget their commander this time is one of the Three Great Heavens, Bai Ze," Wang Bi said calmly, unaffected.
"Three Great Heavens Bai Ze!" The scout was shocked.
...
"It seems our army has been taken by surprise," Ren Mo said.
"A bunch of rabble, unable to even handle a group of West Mountain peasants," Song Zuo, another Great Li general, spoke up.
"Do not underestimate West Mountain; don't forget they once had a Jiang Divine Spear," Bai Ze said calmly.
Although he bore the title of the Three Great Heavens and desired to surpass the achievements of the ancient Four War Lords, he did not fail to respect them. His ancestor was also one of the Four War Lords, the War God Bai Jian.
"My Lord is correct," Ren Mo agreed, while Song Zuo remained silent.
"Let's wait and see which way the battle tilts," Bai Ze said, his gaze fixed on the vast battlefield.
...
"Su Dongliu, you've only killed two hundred, I've already killed two hundred and one, you lose!" Ding Boling shouted.
"It's two hundred and ten now," his greatsaber swept through a large patch of Great Li infantry.
"Child's play, I don't care," Su Dongliu said coldly, but the long sword in his hand betrayed him. The blade's light reflected the terrified faces of enemy soldiers as heads fell and blood flowed.
The sword shadow slashed through an enemy cavalryman, decapitating both man and horse. Su Dongliu was like a sword god rampaging without rivals.
"You two brats, you seek death!" An enemy Heavenly Human General, his blood boiling, roared in fury.
Seeing so many of his men die at the hands of those two kids, a fire of rage erupted in his heart.
"Hmph, who dies is not yet certain," Ding Boling swung his greatsaber to meet the attack. The two blades clashed, sparking fire. The Heavenly Human General's horse was unaffected, but Ding Boling was knocked aside. Su Dongliu quickly reached out to steady him.
"Don't underestimate the enemy. He is a Sixth Rank expert, and on horseback, his force is not something you can face directly," Su Dongliu said.
"I know," Ding Boling nodded seriously; it seemed not having a warhorse was still a major disadvantage.
"Let's go together," Ding Boling said. Now, both had a common goal of killing the enemy general; there was no point in competing with Su Dongliu anymore.
"Fine, after killing him, I'll leave you in the dust again," Su Dongliu nodded.
The enemy general suddenly swung his greatsaber at the air beside him. *Boom!* a loud sound rang out as an arrow was blocked and fell back. His eyes looked toward the distance of the battlefield where Liang was frowning, notching another arrow.
"It's Liang, he wants to intervene," Ding Boling realized.
"It's not just Liang," Su Dongliu looked up and said.
Two massive great hammers appeared above the enemy general's head, along with a long spear as red as fire. The piercing sound of the wind aimed straight for the general's head. He instantly turned, raising his greatsaber to block.
What met the general's eyes were two youths like demon gods. One had bright red eyes, swinging two great hammers larger than himself. The other had a cold expression, the fiery red Overlord Spear coming alive in his hand, bending into an arc as it descended.
His greatsaber had just blocked the two hammers when it was struck by another blow from the Overlord Spear. First, the general's bones shattered, then he lost all strength to resist as the hammers and spear shredded his body.
"So strong!" A West Mountain Heavenly Human General stared wide-eyed at Li Xin and Zheng Donglin's display of power, unable to help wondering who these two children were, what their background was, and if they were true descendants of a hidden clan.
"Well done!" Zheng Donglin praised.
"Mm," Li Xin nodded. Once on the battlefield, he didn't want to talk much; his mind held only one thought: kill as many enemies as possible.
The West Mountain cavalry, led by a Heavenly Human General, charged into the Great Li soldiers. Unexpectedly, the enemies huddled together into a single mass and simultaneously knelt, their shields resting on each other's shoulders and stacking up, turning into a small fortification.
*Crash!* The West Mountain cavalry was caught off guard by the sudden situation, slamming into the Great Li fortification. The cavalry, charging at high speed, hit the hard obstacle, and the entire group was tossed into the air.
Behind them, the Great Li soldiers saw the opportunity had come and rushed forward, raising their weapons to kill all the West Mountain soldiers.
"West Mountain Heavenly Human General, die!" A Great Li Heavenly Human General saw this and sneered, his greatsaber decapitating the opponent.
