Chapter 27
Divine Crossbow vs. Divine Crossbow
"My Lord!" After the West Mountain Heavenly Human General was cut down, the soldiers under his command wailed in unison, their tears like a broken dam as they roared at the sky.
"I must kill you!" one soldier, tears streaming down his face, stared at the enemy Heavenly Human General and roared.
"You stupid West Mountain dogs!" the Great Li Heavenly Human General said disdainfully. The Great Li soldiers instantly surrounded him, giving the West Mountain soldiers no chance to attack.
"Don't run, stand your ground if you have the guts!" the West Mountain soldiers' eyes were bloodshot as they watched the enemy general disappear into the ranks, only able to roar in frustration.
The Great Li giants appeared, sowing a field of bloody carnage. Their greatsabers rampaged across the battlefield, and countless West Mountain soldiers lost their lives, with no one able to stop them.
"I hit him!" a West Mountain infantryman luckily managed to sneak a stab into one of the Great Li giants, blood seeping from the blade. But the wound only made the giant frown, his face turning hideous. He swung his greatsaber, cleaving the infantryman in two from the head down.
The enemy Heavenly Human General nodded with satisfaction as he saw the giants sweeping through the enemy, while he himself retreated deeper into the ranks to observe the situation.
"Get lost!" Zheng Donglin's spear swept in a heaven-shaking circle, shredding the bodies of the giants. With another sweep of the spear, a row of giants fell.
"Leave the giants to me, you all destroy the Great Li fortifications!" Zheng Donglin shouted, then rode the Green Ox into the midst of the giants.
"Destroy the fortifications!" Heavenly Human General Ding Feng shouted, and the other infantrymen immediately charged at the fortifications built from the enemy's shields.
"Get out of the way!" Li Xin ran over at this moment, letting out a roar. He jumped from the sky, both hands gripping two massive great hammers, utilizing his full body weight to deliver a heaven-rending blow to the fortifications.
*Boom!* The aftershock of the strike was so powerful that the earth and stones shook. The nearby cavalry, regardless of friend or foe, lost their balance, and some weaker infantrymen collapsed.
After that earth-shattering blow, the fortifications shattered, and those beneath them did not escape their fate, turning into a mess of pulped flesh.
"How refreshing!" Li Xin licked his lips, brandishing the two blood-stained great hammers, puffing out his chest and tilting his neck.
"Ah!" Some Great Li soldiers were terrified, nearly wetting their pants, their legs trembling, unable to stand firm.
*Whoosh!* An arrow shot from deep within the enemy camp. Li Xin's eyes widened, and he swung a great hammer to defend, but the arrow was too fast; before he could block, it pierced through one of his legs.
Li Xin was in pain, his eyes turning even redder as he roared in anger. He wanted to find the person who had wounded him; he would surely kill them.
Deep within the Great Li ranks, a youth was squinting one eye while drawing a bow—it was the one who had just injured Li Xin. This person was one of Great Li's young talents, one of the Northern Ten Bows, Ao Qiao.
Ao Qiao calmly notched an arrow, surprised that Li Xin could avoid his shot. His initial target had been Li Xin's head, but he hadn't expected the opponent to react in time, so the arrow could only hit his left leg.
*Whoosh!* Ao Qiao released his hand, the arrow tearing through the wind toward Li Xin. A hint of fear flashed in Li Xin's eyes as he quickly turned to run.
"Where are you going?" Ao Qiao said dismissively; his arrows were merciless once fired, and once he aimed at someone, they surely could not escape.
Suddenly, Ao Qiao was stunned; his arrow had been blocked by someone else. It was a youth dressed in black, using a long sword to parry it.
"Are you alright?" Su Dongliu asked. He saw an arrow stuck in Li Xin's leg, blood flowing out continuously.
Li Xin gritted his teeth and said nothing, staring hatefully at Ao Qiao. In his life, he feared archers the most because he lacked agility, so he couldn't face them, especially one of the famous Northern Ten Bows.
"That guy is very far away; to kill him, we have to charge deep inside," Su Dongliu said.
"Kill!" Li Xin roared in fury, seemingly no longer feeling the pain in his left leg.
"Charging into the enemy alone is just foolish. They have infantry for defense; even if you break through layer after layer of lines, by then that guy will have enough time to kill you," Su Dongliu said coldly.
"What should I do?" Li Xin asked blankly.
"Wait," Su Dongliu replied.
"Soldiers, form the Divine Crossbow formation!" As if responding to Su Dongliu's words, Heavenly Human General Ding Feng shouted. The cavalry neatly formed a straight line, each holding a sharp long spear.
A thousand soldiers used their bodies to become arrows, charging straight into the enemy's defensive lines. The human-shaped arrows were unstoppable; Great Li's shield defense was as thin as white paper, instantly pierced and scattered.
"Well done!" Li Xin praised happily.
"Archers, take positions!" Ao Qiao shouted at this moment.
Behind him, two thousand people stepped out, each an archer, simultaneously drawing their bows toward the sky.
"Divine Crossbow tactic!" Ao Qiao waved his hand and shouted: "ATTACK!"
Two thousand archers pulled their bowstrings, and countless arrows flew across the sky, raining down on the West Mountain soldiers.
Both sides used the name "Divine Crossbow," but West Mountain's Divine Crossbow used cavalry as the attacking force, while Great Li's Divine Crossbow used archers as the core force.
For every person killed by West Mountain's Divine Crossbow, Great Li's Divine Crossbow killed just as many, if not more.
"Ah!" Arrows pierced the armor of countless soldiers; some looked like hedgehogs, their bodies covered in arrows.
"Hold the formation!" Ding Feng saw things were not going well but still had to keep his formation stable. If the Divine Crossbow formation broke now, they would surely suffer unimaginable consequences.
*Whoosh!* A Great Li archer was suddenly targeted by an arrow from afar; before he could see anything clearly, his head exploded.
"West Mountain has archers attacking," Ao Qiao's brow twitched slightly.
"What are you waiting for? Why aren't you attacking them?" Liang saw his side's archers not launching an attack while the infantry suffered heavy losses, unable to understand what they were waiting for.
"My Lord, why haven't you allowed the archers to attack?" a West Mountain general couldn't help but ask.
"Conserve the arrows; now is not the time." Wang Bi observed the situation and shook his head. To him, this was a long-term war; exhausting all arrows now was not a wise choice. His numbers were greater than Great Li's, but most were peasants. Let the peasants act as cannon fodder to reduce the enemy's arrow count.
The West Mountain general said no more; he knew Wang Bi's purpose was to use the peasants as meat shields to absorb the enemy's attacks.
"You people!" Liang was angry. If others wouldn't act, he would do it himself. Arrows continuously shot from his bow.
"Impressive!" Ao Qiao was surprised; every arrow Liang fired killed an archer on his side.
"Ignore him, you all keep firing!" Ao Qiao saw his archers starting to aim at Liang to retaliate and shouted. He knew that among the two thousand under his command, no one was capable of hitting Liang from here. Therefore, he would act personally.
"Take this arrow!" Ao Qiao drew his bowstring tight and released. The arrow tore through the wind across half the battlefield, aiming straight for Liang.
Liang also drew an arrow and fired back. His arrow hit Ao Qiao's, but Ao Qiao's arrow did not stop; it split Liang's arrow in two and continued flying straight ahead.
"A powerful opponent!" Liang quickly drew the dagger from his waist, holding it in front of him to block. *Clang!* a loud sound rang out, and a massive force transmitted to his arm, pushing him back. He looked toward Ao Qiao in shock.
"He didn't die." Ao Qiao was annoyed, not expecting two brats to escape his arrows today without dying.
Liang was not intimidated by Ao Qiao for long; he drew another arrow from the quiver behind him, notched it, and aimed at Ao Qiao.
Ao Qiao also drew an arrow to fire back. The two archers dueled, unable to determine a winner for the moment, giving the West Mountain army some time to breathe.
"Take the chance and charge!" West Mountain's morale soared, and the soldiers shouted. The Divine Crossbow formation continued to pierce through layer after layer of enemy defense.
Zheng Donglin rode the Green Ox, his spear sweeping across the battlefield. By now, his eyes were fixed on Ao Qiao. His heart was firm; this person had to die. At this moment, Ao Qiao was truly too great a threat to the West Mountain army; if he were allowed to become free again, West Mountain would surely face great trouble.
"Ah!" A Great Li giant with a Fourth Rank cultivation base swung an axe down at Zheng Donglin.
Zheng Donglin raised the Overlord Spear to block, the force from above making the Green Ox retreat a bit.
The Green Ox was angry, its hooves stomping hard on the ground, its horns goring the giant, piercing through the protective armor.
The giant stumbled back, one hand clutching the wound, the other swinging the axe. Zheng Donglin lightly released a palm strike, the dragon-shaped True Qi crushing the giant's head.
"We're almost at the enemy archers' position!" Ding Feng saw this and waved his hand, cheering.
Indeed, they were not far from Ao Qiao's position; just one more wave of attack and they would succeed.
"Excellent." Ding Feng looked at Zheng Donglin's group and nodded. This time, West Mountain had produced some treasures. If they didn't die after this city defense battle, perhaps they would become names that made other countries tremble when mentioned.
