Chapter 23
Something Is Amiss
Yan Shanqing withdrew his gaze. "As the head of the three great Immortal Venerables, you have sat in a high position for many years. You should do what needs to be done.
"Ever since you returned ten years ago, you have grown lazy. You do not hunt demons, nor do you suppress the Four Slayers Realm. You do not even bother to visit the Immortal Alliance.
"Now that the Four Slayers Realm is in turmoil, should you not take action?"
Yu Zhiling: "I should."
She answered seriously, with great sincerity.
For some reason, standing before Yan Shanqing, she felt she ought to speak to him in this manner.
The system did not pop up to remind her to maintain her so-called villain persona either.
Yan Shanqing's hand brewing the tea paused. Clearly, he had not expected her to be so obedient, and he looked up at her once more.
Being stared at by a stranger like this, Yu Zhiling took a deep breath, her voice softening. "I will go suppress the Four Slayers Realm this time. I have troubled First Senior Brother to worry."
Yan Shanqing's expression at this moment was extremely colorful. His thin lips were tightly pressed together, looking as if he were about to flip the table on the spot.
Yu Zhiling: "...I will go suppress the Four Slayers Realm this time?"
Yan Shanqing's expression remained unchanged, dark and inscrutable.
Yu Zhiling tried again: "I have troubled First Senior Brother to worry?"
Yan Shanqing's face grew a fraction colder as he ground out each word: "This was originally your responsibility. You have lazed around for so many years; it is time you stretched your muscles and bones. Do you have any idea how many people in Zhongzhou will die if something goes wrong with the Four Slayers Realm?"
So that sentence was wrong. Yu Zhiling felt a headache coming on. She had absolutely no idea where the problem lay and could only reply in a low voice, "Senior Brother's teachings are correct."
After all, with her current memories, if Zhuo Yu had been raised by Yan Shanqing, their relationship shouldn't be too bad. Yan Shanqing was probably like an elder brother to Zhuo Yu, so she just needed to be obedient and listen.
However... Yan Shanqing remained silent.
Yu Zhiling did not realize that something was amiss with him.
She stealthily reached her hand toward the freshly poured teacup in front of Yan Shanqing. Ever since she entered the room, she had been staring at it. She was dying of thirst; she hadn't had a single sip of water since she woke up.
However, before her fingers could even touch the teacup, Yan Shanqing suddenly slammed the table and stood up!
"Yu Zhiling, what on earth are you doing!"
His voice boomed, and a powerful aura swept over her. Yu Zhiling subconsciously trembled. What was wrong with this man?
She clearly hadn't done anything!
Yan Shanqing turned and stepped down from the glazed platform, intending to leave. But after taking a few steps, he stopped and turned his head to look at Yu Zhiling, who was leaning against the window.
She was frowning, using a handkerchief to wipe away the water that had soaked her sleeve. Her gentle demeanor bore none of her former arrogance.
After all, Yu Zhiling had only recently arrived in this world and was still unaccustomed to her status as a cultivator. When her sleeve got wet, she instinctively wiped it with a handkerchief, completely forgetting that a simple Cleansing Spell could resolve everything.
A stream of cold spiritual energy suddenly descended, and a spell seal landed on her wrist. In the blink of an eye, the soaked sleeve dried right before her eyes.
Immediately after, a hand grabbed her wrist, paused briefly, and then let go. The red mark left by the hot tea burn had completely vanished.
Before she could react, a cup of tea was brought to her lips.
"Drink."
