Chapter 4
The Secret Door
Thinking of her late grandfather, Jiang Rang's eyes reddened again. Her grandfather had loved her dearly, and it was a pity that even though she had been reborn, she no longer had the chance to show him her filial piety.
This grocery store held a secret; it was no ordinary shop.
In her previous life, this store had once been caught in a massive fire. Afterward, Jiang Rang had spent money to renovate it, and the business had made a small profit. After the renovations, she discovered the grocery store had a back door. Curious about where it led, she turned the handle and opened it. But when she did, the scene on the other side was the Qing Dynasty.
It was an era of widespread war and chaos. With her beauty, she had almost been kidnapped by bandits to become a bandit chief's wife the moment she stepped out. That incident had scared her out of her wits, so from then on, she never dared to open that door again, fearing she might never return.
Now, she wondered which era would be behind the door when she opened it?
Jiang Rang used a willow twig from her basket to prick her finger and dripped a drop of blood onto the rusted doorknob. She remembered that in her past life, she had accidentally cut her hand on the door latch, and after it bled, she opened the door to find the Qing Dynasty. This time, even if it led to a dangerous past, she wanted to try once more.
When Jiang Rang pushed the door open again, what lay behind was not the weed-choked backyard she expected, but the back entrance of a fire station. As her foot stepped out, a wave of sweltering heat hit her. Then, she saw the familiar streetscape of Luocheng from many years in the future. Young people walked by with their eyes glued to their phones, and everyone who passed turned to look at her.
Whether they looked at her because of her beautiful face or because of her 1980s-style clothing, she wasn't quite sure.
