Chapter 49
The Truth Comes To Light
Gu Fadian stopped and asked, "Auntie, isn't Ban Xia wearing a dress right now?"
Only then did Qin Xiu notice Ban Xia’s outfit. The girl was wearing a white shirt paired with a black skirt. Her fair, rosy skin made her look even more well-behaved and adorable.
Gu Fadian led Ban Xia away at a run, and she hurriedly chased after them. Seeing they were about to reach the compound gate, Qin Xiu suddenly let out an "Ouch!" Her legs gave way, and she sat flat on the ground, wailing, "Oh my goodness, my leg! Ban Xia, Mommy sprained her ankle! Come here and help Mommy up!"
Ban Xia stopped abruptly, and Gu Fadian also halted. Both turned their heads to look back. It was obvious at a glance that she was faking. Qin Xiu was so afraid of getting dirty that she had chosen a clean spot to sit and had even cleverly placed a cushion under her bottom.
Gu Fadian was secretly worried. No child doesn't love their mother; no matter how clumsy this "bitter struggle" tactic was, he could see through it, but Ban Xia was young and innocent. He feared she would soften and go back. If she did, all his efforts would go down the drain.
But he was wrong. Ban Xia only looked for a moment before tightening her grip on Gu Fadian’s hand and turning to continue running.
"Hurry, Big Brother, or we won't make it," the girl said. "I need to get to the hospital for the exam. Once I'm better, we have to go find Mother Lin Jun."
Yesterday, Ban Xia had heard Hu Jie say that a blood type test could determine biological relationships. She wanted to get to the hospital quickly; though she didn't understand what a blood test was, she looked forward to it immensely.
Gu Fadian’s footsteps faltered slightly as a thought flashed through his mind: If his mother knew there was such an adorable younger sister in this world, would she come back to visit him, even just for a look? But then he dismissed it; it was impossible. After his sister died, his father had suggested adopting another girl. At that time, his mother had only looked at the two of them and laughed coldly—a laugh that still made him shiver. His mother wasn't like him; she only loved the sister who had died because of his carelessness.
Nevertheless, Gu Fadian felt happy. He had once accidentally caused the death of a little girl, but now, he could save the life of another. Still a teenager at heart, he spread his arms and ran down the road. It wasn't until he heard his sister's faint calls from behind that he realized he had left her far behind. He hurried back, scooped her up, and continued to run like the wind.
