Jealousy in the Fields

Jealousy in the Fields

As if reminding her, "Mommy, you forgot something."

Du Yueyao was still dazed, but looking at the boy's expectant gaze, she suddenly understood.

She stepped closer, cupped his soft face, and placed a gentle kiss on his forehead.

"Our Xiao Han was also very good today."

His mother's voice was so gentle. She praised him and even kissed him. Gu Yinghan's eyes lit up, and it felt as if fireworks were exploding in his head, leaving him in a blissful daze.

Gu Yingming, who had just turned back to find his brother, witnessed this scene. His heart felt both sour and soft, a feeling he couldn't quite name. He only thought that because his brother had been stolen away by that bad woman, he felt sad.

Well, as long as his brother was happy, Gu Yingming thought absentmindedly.

On the way to deliver food to Gu Si, the two boys ran and jumped around, fully displaying their childish nature. Their bangs were soaked with sweat, and their small faces were flushed red, overflowing with uncontrollable joy.

They had seen others deliver food to their parents, but this was the very first time they got to deliver food to their father!

From behind, Du Yueyao softly warned, "Run slowly, watch out for falls!" Only then did the two behave themselves a bit more.

Since they were familiar with their father's usual route in the village, they walked ahead to lead the way for Du Yueyao.

Quite a few elderly villagers who didn't work in the fields were sitting under the shade of trees to cool off. Seeing Du Yueyao carrying food and leading her sons past, they all showed curious and unfamiliar expressions. A few even teased the two children, asking where they were going.

Gu Yingming shouted proudly, "We are going to deliver food to Daddy!"

Feeling their gazes glued to her, Du Yueyao felt her scalp go numb. This was the largest intelligence network in the village; even if the Heavenly King himself came, he would be gossiped about in two hundred different ways before being let off.

She immediately quickened her pace.

Before long, Gu Si's figure came into view.

Under the blazing sun, Gu Si had taken off his shirt. His body boasted firm muscles that looked as if they were carved from stone, paired with a handsome, cold face. This left quite a few passing young wives and girls staring in a daze.

Among them was the female protagonist and work-point recorder, Li Feifei.

"Gu Si, your wife is bringing the kids to deliver food to you!"

Someone in the crowd shouted, and Li Feifei snapped out of her daze, hurriedly tearing her gaze away from Gu Si.

Du Yueyao took in the entire scene.

Gu Si turned toward the sound. A fair and slender figure appeared amidst the fields, looking like a delicate rose swaying in a greenhouse. Completely out of place in the rugged surroundings, she walked toward him step by step.

Although Du Yueyao had been married to Gu Si for six years, in the eyes of the villagers, she had always been cold and distant like a stranger. Seeing her appear this time, everyone looked up from their work in surprise, staring curiously at the two of them.

Amidst the golden, ripe paddy fields, the woman in the white dress stood next to Gu Si's tall frame, looking incredibly petite and delicate, instantly leaving quite a few people staring in a daze.

Gu Si tossed aside the farming tool in his hand and strode toward Du Yueyao. As his eyes swept past the admiring gazes of the onlookers, a sudden wave of irritation rose in his heart.

He frowned and asked coldly, "What are you doing here?"

Realizing his tone was too harsh, Gu Si softened it slightly, his voice carrying a hint of awkwardness. "The fields are dirty. If there's anything, just ask Xiao Ming to tell me."

Du Yueyao shook her head. "It's not dirty. You haven't eaten yet, so the children and I brought food for you."

"Or is it that you don't want me here?"

She leaned closer to Gu Si and looked up at him, her voice carrying a trace of grievance.

"Cough... no." A flash of unnaturalness appeared on Gu Si's stern, cold face.

"Clatter!" A sound came from not far away. Du Yueyao glanced over and saw Li Feifei flusteredly picking up the work-point ledger she had dropped on the ground before hurriedly walking away. A faint smile flickered in Du Yueyao's eyes.

Turning her head, she met Gu Si's slightly teasing gaze; clearly, her little action just now had not escaped his eyes.

Caught red-handed, Du Yueyao's face flushed slightly, and she quickly averted her gaze.

Gu Si turned to sweep his gaze around. Intimidated by his warning look, the surrounding villagers immediately lowered their heads and focused on their work.

"I brought meat burgers and mung bean soup."

Considering that Gu Si would need to wash his hands, Du Yueyao had specially brought two flasks—one containing chilled mung bean soup, and the other containing water for washing hands.
