Chapter 40
Confrontation
Although Du Yueyao liked cooking, she truly had a headache when dealing with greasy dishes, so she didn't refuse Gu Si's initiative at all.
Seeing that the sun was bright today, Du Yueyao brought all the bedding out to air.
She discovered that except for her own blanket, which had a silk lining, the rest were ordinary coarse cloth bedding.
According to the original owner's memory, it was because Gu Si noticed her skin getting irritated and red from the coarse blankets, so he had proactively exchanged it for her.
Du Yueyao thought to herself that before the weather turned cold, she must also change the blankets for the two children; children's skin was also very sensitive.
While she was lost in thought, she was interrupted by Gu Si's stern voice.
"Who injured Mom yesterday?"
The two children who were playing immediately froze.
Du Yueyao, who was hanging the blankets, also felt her heart sink.
What had to come would eventually come; this matter could not be easily brushed aside.
"Me!" Gu Yingming puffed out his chest and proactively stepped forward.
Gu Si had always taught the two to take responsibility for their actions, so although the children were a bit mischievous, they didn't have the usual bad habits.
Gu Yingming wasn't even as tall as Gu Si's leg, but when facing his father's gaze, the little boy didn't back down at all.
Father and son were truly carved from the same mold.
Watching this, Du Yueyao's heart raced. Just as she was about to speak up to ease the tense atmosphere, Gu Si cut her off.
He spoke in a stern tone, his cold face commanding respect without even being angry.
"Explain clearly!"
"This woman made my brother unhappy!"
After all, Gu Yingming was only a four-year-old child. Being scolded by his father, his voice couldn't help but sob.
Gu Si knew Gu Yingming's words weren't clear; the boy was only saying what he had seen. Therefore, he turned to look at Gu Yinghan.
He knew his eldest son, though quiet, was much more sensitive and mature than other children his age.
A long time passed, yet Xiao Han still had no reaction. He only lowered his head and bit his nails, his heart filled with conflict.
The person who saved him from the cellar was Mom, but the person who locked him in the cellar was also Mom.
Therefore, Gu Yinghan lowered his head, remaining silent.
The father and his two sons stood in a stalemate.
Continuing like this was not a solution. Du Yueyao took a deep breath and proactively stepped forward to admit her mistake.
"Don't blame the two children. It's my fault. I was the one who locked Xiao Han, who had a fever, in the cellar before I left."
After saying this, Du Yueyao closed her eyes in despair, not knowing what she was about to face.
Would it be Gu Si's disgust, or the hateful glares of the two children...
*Could it be that she was truly going to lose these two children?*
"If you don't like the children, I will take them to my sister-in-law's house. You don't have to worry about being tied down by children. You can leave whenever you want; I can file for divorce with you at any time."
Gu Si's voice carried no emotion whatsoever. He packed his things and prepared to leave.
Du Yueyao didn't like children, and these two children weren't born out of her own free will; Gu Si had never forgotten that.
Even though those words were very cruel to say in front of the children.
"No!" Du Yueyao didn't expect to hear such words. She opened her eyes wide and hurriedly stopped him.
"I will try to learn how to be a good mother. Trust me."
Gu Si didn't show a clear attitude, his gaze resting on the two children.
Xiao Han hesitated for a moment, then took a step toward Du Yueyao. His meaning was very clear: today, he wanted to stay with Mom.
Xiao Ming puffed out his cheeks and said, "I want to stay by my brother's side to protect him from being bullied by the bad woman!"
Du Yueyao was incredibly moved. Her efforts throughout the day had not been in vain; the two children no longer viewed her as a wild beast.
At this moment, the drumbeat from the town's construction site sounded.
Gu Si instructed, "The food is in the kitchen cabinet. I'll be back after work tonight."
Having said that, he grabbed the farming tools in the corner of the house and hurriedly left.
Only Du Yueyao and the two children were left, looking at each other in silence.
Du Yueyao continued to tidy up the house; today, only a few chores remained.
Before Gu Si had even gone far, the two children, like a puff of smoke, were about to run outside to play, only to be grabbed by the collar of their shirts by Du Yueyao, one in each hand.
