Chapter 14
An Unexpected Decision
She wasn't worried about failing the selection.
The village party secretary stood up to speak: "We have called the young educated youths here today to select one person to represent our Qingyuan Village to make a report at the commune."
"Each person has a different level of contribution, so after discussion among the leadership team, it has been decided that I, along with the five cadres here, will cast our votes."
Then came the official voting.
The first two people voted for Li Fei Fei, which was entirely within everyone's expectations.
The next two people voted for Du Yue Rao, causing a stir of surprise among the villagers.
Only the last two deciding votes remained.
The second-to-last cadre hesitated for a long time before casting his vote.
"I choose Li Fei Fei."
After voting, he looked at the village secretary with an apologetic gaze.
The village secretary's expression stiffened. They had clearly agreed just now to vote for Du Yue Rao, so why did he change his mind? This was also because he hadn't made it clear, making people think he was playing favorites.
The village secretary took a deep breath, stepped forward, and cast his final vote for Du Yue Rao.
"Is it a tie?"
"What do we do now?"
"Are they both going?"
The villagers whispered among themselves, everyone surprised. Who would have thought that Du Yue Rao, who was expected to not get a single vote, would tie with Li Fei Fei?
"Let me cast the final vote." A voice rang out from afar. Everyone turned to look—it was the village chief!
Upon seeing the village chief, Li Fei Fei couldn't hide her smile. Her family had a distant relative connection to the village chief's family. Surely he wouldn't choose that lazy woman over her?
Li Fei Fei rejoiced inwardly; she had even prepared her thank-you speech.
But the next second...
The village chief directly cast his vote for Du Yue Rao.
The scene instantly fell dead silent.
No one expected that the person who won the opportunity to report to the commune would be Du Yue Rao—the one famous for being the laziest person in the village.
"Village Chief, you aren't mistaken, are you? That's Du Yue Rao..." The curly-haired female educated youth muttered, her face filled with disbelief.
"How could it be Du Yue Rao going to make the report..." She kept repeating in astonishment.
Li Fei Fei also stood frozen in place, unable to move for a long time.
Making a report was one of the few opportunities to go to town. If noticed by the leaders, one might even be kept there to work. For this report, she had prepared for a long time, practicing her voice constantly, and even starving herself for a month to look more elegant.
Yet in the end, the person chosen was Du Yue Rao?
"It's decided then." The village chief had always been a man of his word; once he made a decision, no one dared to object.
The curly-haired female youth's expression grew heavier. If so, then...
"Hey, you, the one who bet on washing your hair upside down, I really want to see how you crawl out of the hole you dug for yourself."
The clear voice of the baby-faced female youth rang out, audible to everyone present.
The villagers didn't even care about going to work anymore; they all gathered around to watch the fun. No matter who ended up embarrassed, they would be equally amused.
"That's right, isn't that basin still over there? Do you need me to fetch some water for you?" Du Yue Rao asked back with a smile.
"You... Du Yue Rao, don't go too far!"
"When was I too far? Weren't you the one jumping up and down demanding a bet with me? If I had lost, would you have let me off?"
The woman's face darkened, and she immediately changed the subject.
"Hmph, you know very well how you got this spot. Who knows what shady things you did behind our backs!"
Before Du Yue Rao could speak, a male voice rang out from behind.
"Comrade, you must have evidence when you speak. You cannot make baseless accusations and slander someone's reputation."
"Village Chief..." The curly-haired female youth instantly weakened upon seeing the village chief.
Seeing this, Li Fei Fei stepped forward.
"Village Chief, please don't blame her. She was just curious as to why Du Yue Rao was chosen to make the report when she has never done any work."
It sounded like she was defending her, but in reality, she was using someone else's mouth to question the village chief on why he chose Du Yue Rao.
"Who said Du Yue Rao hasn't done anything? To respond to the state's literacy campaign, our village will build a primary school early next year."
"Comrade Du Yue Rao and her parents are highly educated. Over the past few years, she has been researching and analyzing educational content."
