Chapter 16
Driving in the Open Fields
Upon arriving at the driving school, Xiao Ya had already learned of Xiao Die's temporary leave from work through their unit's group chat. Her sadness from being left behind by Xiao Die when they went to buy stinky tofu last time vanished, and she rushed to embrace her friend.
"Xiao Die, you're leaving, and I'm the only one left in our team!"
Xiao Die was momentarily speechless. Shen Fu, standing beside them, teased, "Why don't you quit too?"
"No way, Xiao Die has her husband to take care of her after she leaves, but if I leave, what will I have?" Xiao Ya resolutely shook her head; she absolutely had to keep this stable job.
Xiao Die gave her friend a farewell gift and promised they would still gather frequently. Afterward, they went to practice driving together. Xiao Ya was confident that she had practiced quite well, while Xiao Die was sure to drive steadily. Shen Fu gave Xiao Die a few instructions, put some things in her bag, and then sat in the car to wait.
This time, the instructor was a woman. Xiao Die sat in the driver's seat, and the car began to move erratically. After one lap, the instructor flew into a rage.
"Who said this was a genius student? Who said she could drive at seventy kilometers an hour with a carefree attitude? Change drivers immediately!"
Xiao Die obediently endured the scolding; this was indeed her first time behind the wheel, so she was completely flustered. Xiao Ya tried to explain that Xiao Die was a Qinghua top student and very capable of learning.
The instructor sighed, "A Qinghua top student? No wonder. I once taught another Qinghua girl who only passed after five attempts. I guess I'm just incompatible with Qinghua people."
Xiao Die remembered her husband's instructions and took out a pack of expensive cigarettes from her bag, "Instructor, would you like one?"
Xiao Ya was about to stop her, thinking women didn't smoke, but to her surprise, the instructor accepted the entire pack with a much gentler expression, "Take your time practicing. Driving requires courage and caution; don't let small noises on the road startle you."
Shen Fu sat in the car listening to music, secretly pleased to see his wife's progress. He planned to take her back to his hometown tomorrow, borrow his brother-in-law's old car, and let her practice driving on the deserted country roads, where the two of them could freely "drive."
The afternoon ended, and Xiao Die invited Xiao Ya and Wan Zi Tian home for dinner. When she introduced Wan Zi Tian as a famous author, Xiao Ya was incredibly surprised. She was a huge fan of an idol named Sun Chun Guang and hoped he would be cast as the lead in the film adaptation of Wan Zi Tian's novel.
Shen Fu didn't care about the entertainment industry, so he didn't know who Sun Chun Guang was, but he still nodded and promised to keep an eye out. Afterward, he went to buy groceries for a hotpot dinner for everyone.
On his way back, he met the tabby cat he had seen with Bai Miao Miao the other day. He left it a piece of lamb before entering the house. During the hotpot meal, the three women chatted happily. Xiao Ya even considered quitting her job to work at Shen Fu's company, just for a chance to meet her idol.
Xiao Die and Wan Zi Tian reminisced about old college friends. Wan Zi Tian joked that maybe she should get married so everyone could gather. The atmosphere in the house was filled with laughter and warmth.
