Chapter 23
Leaving
After resting, Jiang Chu called her teammates to prepare to set off.
“Here is the map. We will drive out of the base in the opposite direction.”
Jiang Chu opened the map of A Province saved on her phone and circled a small path. The highways were definitely unusable now, so they could only take remote roads. This was advantageous; areas with fewer people had fewer zombies, allowing them to take their time at least after leaving A City.
The group stared at the map with no objections. Currently, they couldn't stay in the A City area; other than leaving, there was no other choice.
Jiang Chu looked toward Liang Tianyong and the Mute Boy, “Is your destination still Zhongjing City?”
If so, Liang Tianyong and the Mute Boy would have to get off and change routes midway. This place was too far from Zhongjing City, and they would have to find a car along the way, making it even more troublesome.
The remaining teammates looked astonished. It was already the apocalypse, yet the two of them still wanted to travel so far?
Liang Tianyong fell silent for a moment, a look of conflict on his face. He turned his head to communicate with the Mute Boy using sign language.
The Mute Boy suddenly shook his head, his eyes filled with reluctance. Liang Tianyong then made a decision, “We're not going anymore. The Mute Boy said your destination is Yi City. Would you mind if the two of us tag along? He can cook and handle logistics without any issue, and I have an ability, so I can protect everyone along the way.”
“I must make it clear beforehand: Yi City is extremely dangerous,” Jiang Chu hesitated for a moment and said honestly.
The information Qin Yan provided was that Yi City had now completely become a dead city. The living population in the entire city did not exceed thirty thousand, and the total number of zombies in Yi City was estimated to be four hundred times the number of people. Furthermore, she still needed to find the whereabouts of the Shiyuzhe leader. This was a very time-consuming and highly dangerous task.
Chen Qingqing and Shen Yinchu followed her voluntarily, and Gao Qingyang and the others' lives were in her hands, so they naturally wanted to follow her too. But Liang Tianyong and the Mute Boy...
Jiang Chu glanced at the Mute Boy's frame, which looked somewhat frail and delicate. If they encountered danger in Yi City, it would be very difficult for them to spare hands to rescue him.
The Mute Boy sensed her gaze, his body tensing slightly.
Liang Tianyong smiled and said, “It's fine. We'll go take a look first. If it doesn't work out, we'll run.”
The group quickly packed their things.
Outside, zombies began to break down the door. The group gripped their guns and daggers tightly. Shen Yinchu stood by the door and quickly opened it.
The zombies that rushed in were dealt with by the coordinated squad. Jiang Chu roughly estimated that they had gained more than a dozen crystal cores.
When the zombie corpses piled up on the ground into a small mound, she retracted her gun and said, “That's enough, let's go.”
She got into her off-road vehicle equipped with a navigation system. Immediately after, Chen Qingqing and Shen Yinchu got in one after another, leaving the zombies stuck outside.
Chen Qingqing casually explained, “The vehicle behind is spacious, so they're all riding in that one.”
Jiang Chu nodded and started the engine.
Currently, the Southern Base had completely changed, no longer showing any of its original appearance. Just as she was about to drive, two people ran up from behind and blocked their vehicle.
The leading woman, her face pale, threw herself onto the front of the car, frantically pounding on the hood. Another man carrying a gun was holding off the approaching zombies.
“You guys have a car and guns, right? I saw everything just now. Take us with you!” Su Jingdao cried out loudly, her face covered in dirty blood, tears mixing into streaks on her face, her hair in a messy bun.
Chen Qingqing said, “It's Su Jingdao.”
Jiang Chu barely recognized her. She narrowed her eyes; Su Jingdao and the man beside her were likely together. Zhang Hu had mentioned there were people in the house behind, so it must be the two of them, or perhaps more than just them.
She rolled down the window just a crack, enough for a finger to fit, so the people outside could hear her voice clearly. “Get out of the way, or I'll run you over.”
Su Jingdao wept miserably, her eyes red, trembling as she dodged the oncoming zombies. She was truly terrified; those zombies were by no means human. The base was destroyed. If Jiang Chu didn't take her along, someone like her who didn't know how to kill zombies and would only be a drag would surely become zombie food or be driven away. She really didn't want to stay here.
“I was wrong before. Aren't we classmates? I apologize to you. Can you take me with you?”
The man chimed in, “Yes, I know a place that is absolutely safe. Let us on the car, and I'll lead you there.”
Chen Qingqing leaned over to look back and said cautiously, “With zombies around, Su Jingdao still dared to rush over. I feel like there are others nearby. This man doesn't look like a good person at all. Wanting to get in our car? In his dreams! Shall we go?”
Jiang Chu agreed, “Yes, that man has a gun in his hand, and he has a sturdy build. As soon as he opened his mouth, he claimed to know an absolutely safe place, trying to lure us into opening the door for him. This is a trap.”
The mockery in her eyes flashed and vanished. From the rearview mirror, she saw that the heavy-duty truck behind was already surrounded by several zombies. They couldn't delay any longer.
“Secure your own safety first. I'm going to plow through.”
Jiang Chu coldly stepped on the gas. At the same time, Su Jingdao and the man sensed the danger. Seeing that she was serious, they scrambled and rolled out of the way.
The car sped through the base. Bullets from different directions struck the vehicle, making Jiang Chu frown. “As expected, they have accomplices.”
Not only her car, but the heavy-duty truck behind also suffered the same fate. However, the exterior armor and performance of both vehicles were not what ordinary cars could compare to, so the bullets hitting them were like mere scratches.
She looked back through the rearview mirror. Su Jingdao grew further and further away, stomping her feet in frustration before fleeing with the man.
“Although it was dangerous this time, overall, a small portion of people survived.”
The car sped through the ruins, leaving the zombies behind. After driving for a few minutes, a massive horde of zombies appeared ahead.
Everyone's expressions changed. They had thought these zombies would gradually disperse after the giant zombie died, but now it seemed that was not the case.
Jiang Chu warned coldly, “Hold on tight and fasten your seatbelts. We are going to force our way through.”
“Yes!”
Jiang Chu floored the accelerator. The off-road vehicle reached a speed of 305 km/h, and the zombies blocking the front were all sent flying, collapsing in heaps on the ground.
Her car currently served to clear the path and draw the zombies' attention and fire. If the heavy-duty truck behind couldn't break through, then the driver of that truck really deserved to die.
The car kept hurtling wildly, swaying up, down, left, and right, a sensation of weightlessness spreading.
Shen Yinchu's head bumped against the ceiling, but she didn't utter a single groan, her eyes fixed intently ahead.
After an unknown amount of time, Jiang Chu slowed down and let out a breath, “We've broken through.”
Chen Qingqing and Shen Yinchu relaxed their chests and hurriedly looked back. The military truck behind also broke through, but its condition wasn't very good. A zombie was still clinging to the side mirror, and many others were reaching their hands toward the vehicle.
Fortunately, that truck had high ground clearance and the rear doors were tightly closed. Liang Tianyong utilized his ability to push off all the zombies clinging to the vehicle.
