Yield to Me and Live

Oct 18, 25Mending Scars

Carrying a future as hazy as the morning mist, Xi Yi silently followed Zuo Jingying deep into the police station.

Xi Yi had a simple yet firm philosophy of life: "Good or bad, we'll see once we get there."

Since everyone's final destination was a cold grave anyway, why worry about things that hadn't happened yet? Living today while worrying about tomorrow was a redundant anxiety when the wheels of fate were already set, and heaven and earth were the ultimate deciders of destiny.

The moment Zuo Jingying stepped into the main hall, a crowd of people stood up simultaneously, bowing to her with genuine respect and warmth, without a hint of pretense.

This scene caught Xi Yi's eye, sparking no small amount of surprise in her. From what she knew, whether it was the captain of the criminal investigation team or a forensic doctor, greetings usually stopped at a slight nod or a few social pleasantries. Yet these people bowed respectfully, as if Zuo Jingying were the supreme bureau chief. Perhaps power and wealth were the key factors.

The captain of the forensic team... Xi Yi silently recalled the woman's earlier introduction. Whatever, why care. She only hoped this annoying woman wouldn't make things difficult and would sign her internship confirmation; that alone would be a huge favor.

With her petite frame standing at only one meter fifty-nine, Xi Yi silently stood behind Zuo Jingying. Zuo Jingying's towering height of one meter seventy almost completely obscured Xi Yi's malnourished body, causing everyone to focus their attention on the forensic captain while forgetting the presence of another person hiding behind her.

At this moment, a voice spoke up, breaking the solemn silence.

"Forensic Doctor Zuo, is she your intern?"

Before Zuo Jingying could speak, Xi Yi quickly stepped forward, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Zuo Jingying, bowing to the seniors: "Hello, everyone. I am Xi Yi, a forensic intern. Today is my first day here to learn. I hope everyone will guide me."

"Okay."

"Good, good, good."

"Xi Yi, your name is very beautiful."

"She is as beautiful as her name. Standing next to Forensic Doctor Zuo, they look like a great match."

Those flattering compliments made Xi Yi's cheeks turn slightly pink with a hint of shyness. But then, a thought flashed through her mind like lightning in a clear sky.

This woman is female, and I am also female. What do they mean by a great match! Even if I liked women, I wouldn't blindly fall in love with someone who is arrogant and looks down on the poor like her.

Does someone who despises others like her even deserve love? I scoff at that.

Beside, who would love someone as poor as me anyway. Furthermore, I don't want to date. It's too troublesome.

Just like Xi Yi, Zuo Jingying felt no small amount of annoyance upon hearing that comment.

Are they crazy! Why would someone like me fall in love with a poor, low-class person like her?

I have no shortage of beautiful, talented women around me. Even if women on earth went extinct, I would reluctantly accept a man before ever lowering myself to love this poor thing.

Zuo Jingying thought to herself, then turned to look at the person who had just teased them. Her lips curled into a cold, mocking smile: "That poor thing—if you like her, feel free to take her."

Those words were like a fuse, igniting the anger Xi Yi had been trying to suppress.

Xi Yi turned around, raising her head to look up at the face looking down on her with disdain, and spoke mockingly: "So what if I'm poor? Did my being poor eat up all the wealth from your ancestors' era?"

"The common end of humanity is death. Instead of spending time judging, dividing classes, and belittling others, why don't you find a way to use that money to bribe King Yama, asking for a little more time to stay in the mortal world and enjoy yourself."

"But it's also strange. You look down on me for being poor, yet you accepted me as your student. Aren't you afraid a poor person like me will affect your high reputation, status, and noble position?"

"Let me tell you, I studied very poorly at school, my mind is slow, and my hands and feet aren't as quick as others. It's still not too late to change students now."

Everyone felt a cold sweat running down their spines. Who here didn't know Zuo Jingying's cold and arrogant temperament?

For this proud woman, there was no such thing as tolerance or forgiveness. If someone crossed her, she would surely find a way to bring them down. Yet this newly arrived intern dared to openly attack the bad temper of this proud young lady.

Hearing this, Zuo Jingying did not get angry but instead let out a cold laugh. She stepped in front of Xi Yi, a slender finger gently lifting Xi Yi's chin, looking at her with disdain as if looking at a puppet being toyed with.

"Here, people like you have no voice. The best thing you can do is yield to my will. Yield to me and you get your internship signature; cross me, and I guarantee you will never graduate in your life. Know your place."

After speaking, Zuo Jingying chuckled aloud, a sound filled with utter contempt. That laugh was like an invisible knife cutting into Xi Yi's self-esteem.

Zuo Jingying let go of Xi Yi's chin, pulled a pristine white handkerchief from her pocket, and slowly wiped the fingers that had just touched Xi Yi's skin, as if she had just touched something filthy.

After wiping, Zuo Jingying threw the handkerchief into a nearby trash can without hesitation and walked calmly toward her office, leaving Xi Yi behind with a belly full of anger about to explode.

Xi Yi was now furious to the extreme, her blood rushing to her brain like an erupting volcano, but that cold threat bound her like an invisible chain. No matter how foolish she was, Xi Yi understood that the power of wealthy people like Zuo Jingying was never small.

Perhaps it was just an empty threat, but if it wasn't, wouldn't the money she invested in this major go down the drain? Even if it was only a small part of the total tuition, it was still hard-earned money she had worked sweat and tears to make.

"Endure, endure, one must know how to endure in the real world," Xi Yi muttered to herself while rubbing her chest, trying to soothe the burning fire of anger in her heart.

As soon as she felt the heat in her body subside, Xi Yi quickly followed behind Zuo Jingying, leaving behind the worried and sympathetic gazes of everyone for the small intern who had dared to challenge the lion.
