Officer Furuya: The Organization's Brainwashing Scheme

Amuro-kun is Definitely Not Bourbon-chan

Chapter 2

Amuro-kun is Definitely Not Bourbon-chan

Kamikawa Ochi, who was also the close childhood friend of Toyama Kazuha's mother, was currently standing far away from Kamikawa Ken. Before Furuya Rei laid out his deduction, she had been standing by Kamikawa Ken's wheelchair like an incomparably filial daughter, attending to his every need.

However, the moment Furuya Rei's deduction reached the halfway point, Kamikawa Ochi shifted her steps, walking away from Kamikawa Ken toward where Tayui Toshie was squatting.

Even though the blonde detective hadn't named the culprit yet, she already knew the truth just by hearing the method of the crime.

"That's right. It was me. We did it." Although she was over forty, Kamikawa Ochi was extremely well-preserved, looking as if she wasn't even thirty.

Kamikawa Ken, who had just managed to catch his breath from laughing at Furuya Rei's "provocation," almost choked again upon hearing the blonde detective's deduction and his daughter's confession.

He clutched his chest, and the doctor beside him quickly attended to his condition.

Hopefully, he wouldn't kick the bucket before even reaching the police station.

What a mess! The doctor called over by the police thought, his forehead covered in black lines.

Kamikawa Ochi clearly had no sympathy for Kamikawa Ken's breathless state, not even sparing him a glance. This formed a sharp contrast to her previous image of a devoted daughter caring for her father behind his wheelchair.

"Old fossil," Kamikawa Ochi said, her words incredibly harsh.

The medical staff hurriedly administered emergency aid to Kamikawa Ken again.

"Ahem, Ms. Kamikawa." Inspector Megure stood in front of Kamikawa Ochi, signaling that as a culprit surrounded by police, she shouldn't be too arrogant, even if Kamikawa Ken was no saint either.

"My apologies." Kamikawa Ochi pulled a slim cigarette from her pocket and lit it, offering an apology that lacked even a shred of sincerity.

She exhaled a puff of smoke. Under the white haze, her gaze toward Kamikawa Ken was filled with utter mockery. "But toward someone who could even sell out his own biological grandchild, I'm sorry, I don't feel the slightest bit of remorse. In fact, I wish he would drop dead right here, right now."

Biological grandchild?

Thinking about the activities the Kamikawa family was involved in, and the fact that there were three infants among the hostages, everyone present instantly understood what Kamikawa Ochi meant.

They had thought the Kamikawa family was twisted enough, but who would have thought they were this monstrous?

Furuya Rei looked at Kamikawa Ochi with cold eyes, not sharing the sudden sympathy some of the onlookers felt for her. "For someone who has performed those surgeries like you, there is absolutely nothing worthy of sympathy."

Out of the younger generations of the Kamikawa family, Kamikawa Ochi was likely the only daughter who studied medicine. During her university years, she had aced her anatomy classes every single time.

Even if the Kamikawa family had hired other "like-minded" doctors, Kamikawa Ochi's hands were definitely not clean.

"While you grieve for your child being sold by Kamikawa Ken, why don't you think about the children whose hearts you personally cut out?" Furuya Rei's gray-blue eyes were filled with nothing but contempt for Kamikawa Ochi. "Or is it that in your eyes, only your own child counts as a human being?"

Those who had felt a twinge of sympathy for Kamikawa Ochi—especially the three girls who were naturally soft-hearted and kind—now didn't know how to face her.

Mori Kogoro walked to the side and whispered something to the three girls. After a moment of hesitation, they walked toward the exit together.

The blonde youth, still in the middle of his deduction, glanced over and saw a certain little detective, who had been stealthily sneaking in by the door, standing not far behind him, joining up with Hattori Heiji.

The faces of both high school detectives looked rather grim.

"Sigh," Kamikawa Ochi sighed. "I thought I could use this excuse to get a lighter sentence. I thought my child dying right after birth was karmic retribution for my sins."

"If those two idiot brothers, Kamikawa Itsuki and the other, hadn't let it slip while drunk, I would have been kept in the dark for the rest of my life."

Inspector Megure's face darkened. He had no sympathy for criminals, but the woman in front of him was taking things too far.

"Ms. Kamikawa, since you have confessed, please come with us to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department to make your statement."

Kamikawa Ochi didn't budge at Inspector Megure's words, letting out a highly disdainful sneer.

With the cigarette still in her mouth, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a remote control.

"Alright, officers, nobody move." Kamikawa Ochi placed her right thumb on the red button of the remote. With her left hand, she unzipped her coat, revealing a tightly bound bomb vest underneath.

Holding the remote in front of her, she squatted down, removed her hairpin, and unlocked Tayui Toshie's handcuffs with one hand, keeping an eye on the police officers who were itching to rush forward and seize the remote.

"I wouldn't if I were you," Matsuda Jinpei, who was standing to the side, said as he observed the bomb on Kamikawa Ochi. "The bomb on her isn't just controlled by the remote. Any sudden pressure could trigger an explosion."

The officers from the First Investigation Division, who had been thinking of subduing the suspect, instantly backed off.

Kamikawa Ochi curled her lips into a creepy smile. "I didn't expect an officer here to actually know his stuff."

"Hurry up and get everyone out of here, otherwise... boom!" Kamikawa Ochi made a mock explosion gesture with her hand. "I don't want my hands stained with any more blood."

Furuya Rei was taken aback, his brow furrowing. Hagiwara Kenji walked over to the load-bearing pillar of the hall, looking up and examining the surroundings.

After checking two pillars, he turned back and nodded to Furuya Rei.

"How many bombs did you plant?" Furuya Rei asked, looking at the seemingly crazed Kamikawa Ochi.

The woman opposite him smiled without a word.

"Every room," Tayui Toshie, standing behind Kamikawa Ochi, said calmly as she looked at everyone, even having the leisure to push up her glasses. "I was the one who set them."

As a servant of the Kamikawa family, it was perfectly normal for her to enter any room, whereas Kamikawa Ochi wandering around would have raised suspicions.

"Inspector Megure, let's get the others out first," Date Wataru walked up to Inspector Megure and said.

Indeed, the top priority right now was to ensure the safety of the innocent people.

Inspector Megure directed the officers to evacuate everyone still inside the Kamikawa mansion.

"We don't know when the bombs will detonate, so move fast!" Inspector Megure barked at his subordinates.

Furuya Rei and the two high school detectives behind him remained still.

"What's wrong? Is our righteous, justice-loving detective still planning to persuade me to surrender?" Kamikawa Ochi looked at Furuya Rei with curiosity.

The blonde youth clamped his hand over Edogawa Conan's mouth just as the boy was about to start his "talk no jutsu." "I don't have the leisure for that."

"!!!"

Edogawa Conan looked up at Furuya Rei with disbelief, only to have his cheek pinched by the older man.

That hurt!

The little detective struggled out of Furuya Rei's grip, hid behind Hattori Heiji, and rubbed his face.

Kamikawa Ochi clearly didn't pay any mind to a small child, looking at Furuya Rei curiously. "Aren't you detectives always the type to stick your noses into everything?"

She remembered there was another detective before. But that person was no longer around. On the operating table back then, that foolish detective had still tried to persuade her to stop and turn herself in.

How laughable.

"I'm not your average detective," Furuya Rei shrugged indifferently, looking completely unbothered.

If he were just acting as Amuro Tooru, he would agree that every life was equal, and that even a culprit shouldn't end their own life.

But in the end, he was Furuya Rei, an undercover Public Security officer.

He wasn't a high school detective like Kudo Shinichi or Hattori Heiji, nor was he a private eye like Mori Kogoro. He didn't have that much empathy for criminals.

Nor did he believe that everyone absolutely had to survive. Even for himself, if an undercover mission required his sacrifice, he wouldn't hesitate for a second.

Well, that was just for himself.

If it were the other four, he would desperately find a way to keep them alive.

This was human nature.

Furuya Rei utterly loathed the two women standing opposite him.

No matter how pretty their words sounded, one revolted because her son was "sold" by her father, and the other assisted her husband in the Kamikawa family's activities, only fighting back when her husband was beaten by the Kamikawas and she herself was targeted.

When they were harming others, they didn't feel a shred of remorse. Only when their own interests were threatened did they "suddenly realize" and fight back?

It was utterly sickening.

Let alone persuading them, if he didn't believe that death was too easy a way out for them to atone for their sins, Furuya Rei wouldn't even want to waste his breath on them.

Besides... would these two women really have the resolve to commit suicide? Furuya Rei didn't believe it for a second.

"If you're not going to persuade me, why are you still standing here?" Kamikawa Ochi waved the remote in her hand threateningly. "Do you want to be buried along with this sinful mansion?"

"No, it's just that as a detective, I can't bear to watch two living souls perish before my eyes," Furuya Rei said, catching sight of Matsuda Jinpei entering from outside and frantically gesturing to him. "But I value my own life even more."

Edogawa Conan was stunned to hear this, looking up at Furuya Rei with half-closed eyes.

*Amuro-niisan, do you actually believe your own words? Please recall that highlight moment when a certain someone used his bare chest to block a gun barrel.*

*Come on, tell me, when have you ever behaved like someone who treasures his own life?*

*Even though you've never failed, many times you've looked way more reckless than me!*

Edogawa Conan, who had originally wanted to use his "talk no jutsu," now kept his mouth shut. After all, having been dragged along by Furuya Rei on so many wild rides, he might not have reacted instantly at first, but once he calmed down, it was easy to tell that his dear Amuro-niisan was up to no good.

"Then you had better beat it," Kamikawa Ochi gestured toward Matsuda Jinpei's anxious face outside. "That officer looks like he has something very important to tell you."

Furuya Rei pursed his lips tightly, looking extremely frustrated at his failure to persuade them, and led Edogawa Conan and Hattori Heiji toward the main entrance.

Ever since Furuya Rei pinched his mouth and forced him behind Hattori Heiji, Edogawa Conan had been tapping secret signals to a certain hot-blooded Osaka high school detective.

*Calm down, calm down.*

The little detective urged his hot-headed friend.

Only then did Furuya Rei successfully lead them out of the hall.

"The bomb is going off in two minutes," Matsuda Jinpei said rapidly, checking his watch. Without stopping his hands, he grabbed Hattori Heiji and picked up Edogawa Conan, dragging them downstairs.

Knowing the gravity of the situation and that Furuya Rei had a backup plan, the two high school detectives didn't struggle.

Furuya Rei walked at the very back, turning to glance at the two women remaining in the hall.

Seeing that everyone had finally left, Kamikawa Ochi let go of the remote with her sweaty palm, disarming the bomb vest.

Within half a minute, with Tayui Toshie's help, she took off the bomb vest.

To make it look realistic, she hadn't used a fake. See? There really was a cop who recognized bombs.

She then pushed aside a painting in the hall, revealing an irregular tunnel behind it.

This was an old secret passage of the Kamikawa family. Previously, because Kamikawa Ken felt it was unsafe, he had ordered someone to seal it off. It just so happened that the person he tasked with this was Kamikawa Ochi.

Although Kamikawa Ochi hadn't planned to overthrow the Kamikawa family back then, she was a cautious person, so she had only sealed it superficially, making it very easy to reopen.

Inside the passage lay two corpses they had prepared beforehand.

"Amuro-niisan!" Once they safely exited the Kamikawa mansion and reached a secure distance, Edogawa Conan impatiently tugged at Furuya Rei's hem.

But just as he called out the name, a series of deafening explosions echoed behind them.

The Kamikawa mansion, an old building with quite some history, blew up.

Flames soared into the sky.

Edogawa Conan and Hattori Heiji were both stunned, turning their heads stiffly to look at Furuya Rei.

*Amuro-niisan, did you really have a backup plan?*

"Here."

Morofushi Hiromitsu, who had appeared out of nowhere, stood behind Furuya Rei and handed him a small device.

Looking at the blinking red dot on the screen, Furuya Rei curled his lips into a smile.

"Inspector Megure, take the officers and come with me to make an arrest~" Furuya Rei's voice carried a hint of playfulness.

Edogawa Conan and Hattori Heiji could understand this—it was the excitement of being about to bring criminals to justice.

However—

The little detective looked at Morofushi Hiromitsu, his glasses reflecting the light.

*When did this guy leave, and when did he reappear?*

*Is that a tracker in Amuro-niisan's hand?*

*When did Tanji Takashi plant it on Kamikawa Ochi and the other woman?*

*Suspicious, way too suspicious.*

Morofushi Hiromitsu, who had been wearing the invisibility spray and following the three of them all along, looked down at Edogawa Conan's "you're highly suspicious" expression and gave an extremely cool nod in response.

Although he didn't quite understand what Furuya Rei was up to, Inspector Megure, who had always trusted his "Amuro-bro" implicitly, didn't hesitate to lead his subordinates behind Furuya Rei, trekking over mountains and rivers...

Well, that was an exaggeration.

After walking for a while.

A small wooden cabin appeared in the middle of the mountain forest.

Furuya Rei looked at the tracker; the red dot was right ahead of them.

Inside—

It was time to wait for the prey to walk into the trap.

When a disheveled Kamikawa Ochi and Tayui Toshie emerged from the cabin, they were met with nearly ten dark gun barrels. They collapsed onto the ground, completely drained of strength.

Staring in disbelief at the scene before her, Kamikawa Ochi looked up, past the police, and met the gray-blue eyes of the blonde youth.

He was half-smiling.

It was as if everything was within his grasp.

To this, the defeated Kamikawa Ochi only had one thing to say— "Unfair! Are you detectives playing dirty?!"

Furuya Rei, the "dirty player," watched as a dazed Kamikawa Ochi—who seemed completely unable to accept that her perfect plan of escaping under a new identity with Tayui Toshie after committing murder and arson had failed—was escorted onto the police car by Date Wataru.

He was absolutely delighted.

Later, he would have Kazami coordinate with the First Investigation Division to take over the suspects.

Dangerous elements like these should be handed over to Public Security to let them taste what true ruthlessness was.

Just as Furuya Rei was feeling triumphant, Edogawa Conan thoroughly ruined his mood by pulling at his clothes with a solemn expression.

"Amuro-niisan," Edogawa Conan spoke hesitantly, "Don't you think Mr. Tanji is a bit strange?"

Furuya Rei stared into his eyes, looking slightly confused. "Strange? In what way?"

"Well... how did Mr. Tanji plant the tracker on Kamikawa Ochi? And Mr. Tanji disappeared for a while earlier, right? Aren't you curious about where he went, Amuro-niisan?" Edogawa Conan widened his eyes, trying to get his beloved Amuro-niisan to realize that the person beside him was highly suspicious.

Reaching out, Furuya Rei flicked the little detective's forehead, looking helpless. "Stop doubting everything and everyone. I was the one who told Tanji to plant the tracker. If he didn't have some skills, how could he be my assistant?"

Seeing Furuya Rei completely blinded, Edogawa Conan felt he couldn't let his Amuro-niisan continue like this. Gritting his teeth, and disregarding whether Furuya Rei would punish him by making him eat raisins again, he confessed what he had overheard from Vermouth.

Furuya Rei looked at the little detective in surprise.

This wasn't acting.

Who would have thought? To think there would actually be a day when the little detective would honestly tell him what he had done.

How touching!
