Chapter 13
Jiu Tian Sui (35)
Alas, his purse was empty; all his food, clothing, and expenses were provided by the manor. Wang Xiu was quite close to him, washing clothes and chatting with him daily, but even if she had money, he was too embarrassed to ask for a loan.
Du Chao Gong glanced at him, set down the stack of official documents, and picked up a porcelain teacup from the padded tray the youth had brought himself.
"You are quite attentive."
He commented calmly, taking a small sip. The tea was perfectly warm, warming the body upon consumption. A faint warmth seemed to linger in his stomach, its effect truly extraordinary.
Chu Feng Qi clenched his fingertips, bowing his head, looking as if he wanted to speak but couldn't, "This humble one dares not presume; it is but my duty."
Hearing this, Du Chao Gong raised his deep, long eyes, his tone nonchalant, "Is there something you wish to say?"
Chu Feng Qi felt as though he was about to be roasted, his ears burning red. He slowly said, "Jiu Tian Sui, this humble one wishes to borrow some silver from Your Excellency. Not much, just a little, for this humble one wishes to buy books."
The youth bowed his head, unable to see Du Chao Gong's expression. He was overcome with embarrassment, but within his sight, Du Chao Gong's slender fingers slowly unfastened the jade pendant from his waist, and without a word, casually tossed it to him.
"Take it and pawn it."
But seeing Chu Feng Qi remain motionless, Du Chao Gong didn't bother to look, stating indifferently, "What, is it not enough?"
The youth knew that if he did not speak quickly, by the time Jiu Tian Sui lost his patience, he would be doomed. Yet the words he wished to say were difficult to utter. His fingers tightened around the warm jade pendant, his face flushed, and finally, he spoke.
"This humble one... this humble one... this humble one wishes to keep it for myself, if that is permissible?"
Du Chao Gong paused.
A moment later, he unexpectedly curved his lips, his voice lazy.
"You are truly too greedy."
Chu Feng Qi's ears burned, the cool touch of the jade pendant in his hand intensifying his agitated emotions. He could only lower his eyes, obediently awaiting the other's reply.
Du Chao Gong clearly understood Chu Feng Qi's intentions. His gaze swept over the youth's flushed face, the corner of his eye subtly lifting.
"Very well, go find the steward and collect the money yourself."
"Many thanks, Jiu Tian Sui."
Chu Feng Qi's face was still flushed, his fingertips trembling slightly. He dared not look up at him, carefully tucked the jade pendant into his inner robe, and then hastily departed, his figure both beautiful and pitiful.
Du Chao Gong retracted his smile, lowered his eyes to pour more hot tea, took a small sip, and continued to review the official documents.
Stepping out of the room, Chu Feng Qi finally had space to breathe. He calmed himself for a long moment before taking the jade pendant from his chest.
The jade pendant gleamed, shaped like a perfect circle, with orchids intricately carved upon its surface. It was exquisitely crafted, appearing both luxurious and noble, its value undoubtedly not cheap.
