The Canary's Escape Plan

Restoring Memories

Chapter 21

Restoring Memories

Baron Moton looked around, seeing skeletons everywhere. The maids and guards in the back garden had been killed in seconds. Before he could even react, he was killed by the young boy before him.
He clutched his head, his voice hoarse: "I knew this day might come, but I didn't expect it to come so soon."
Shang Xing felt he couldn't just kill Baron Moton like that. He wanted Baron Moton to reveal the truth: that Wu Bi was not a Holy Artifact for judging demons, but a sharp weapon for killing people and distorting the truth.
The desire to kill surged, a sharp sound ringing in his ears, tempting him to kill Baron Moton quickly without hesitation.
Baron Moton continued: "I also didn't expect the one to kill me would be a child."
His tone gradually became strange. He suddenly let go of his hands, revealing a distorted face: "Did you think I would be killed so easily? Especially since you are just a child."
Moton's body underwent a transformation. A hideously shaped demon broke through his body, its massive black wings blotting out the sky.
The demon opened its mouth and spat out toxic gas. Within the gas flew strange insects; the insects had human heads and wailed like babies, their mouths emitting a whimpering cry: "Want to eat meat! Want to eat meat!"
The toxic gas instantly filled the entire back garden. The strange human-headed insects were dense, sweeping through the air. The gas corroded all plants. The insects lunged toward Shang Xing, landing on him and opening their mouths, yet they were unable to bite his flesh.
A dark black butterfly mark appeared on Shang Xing's forehead, and a black halo manifested around his body. Under the black halo, all the insects were incinerated into ashes, their wailing cries nearly piercing the sky.
Shang Xing didn't want to waste time. He moved through the toxic gas and instantly appeared behind Baron Moton. The black halo around him could burn everything.
Before Moton could act, he was scorched by the black halo. Flames enveloped the Baron, who rolled on the ground, groaning in agony.
Shang Xing listened to Moton's screams. So demons knew pain too; they couldn't endure the bitterness of suffering either.
Baron Moton had fainted from the pain. Shang Xing waved his hand, and the red flames on the Baron were extinguished. Moton couldn't die just like that; he had to reveal the true face of Wu Bi to the people before he could die.
Shang Xing picked up Baron Moton, intending to take him away, when a silver arrow broke through the air, piercing Baron Moton in an instant.
In a flash, the Baron disintegrated into pieces, his body exploding. Shang Xing was covered in blood and flesh from the blast. He looked toward where the silver arrow had come from, but saw only a deep blue sky with no one in sight.
Someone didn't want Baron Moton to exist. Perhaps this "someone" wasn't a "person," but likely a so-called "Angel."
Since Baron Moton was dead, he had no reason to stay. He returned to his old house.
The house was covered in cobwebs. The moment he pushed the door open, spiders crawled everywhere, and mice hid inside the wood carvings his father had made. The warm home had become a nest for insects and rodents.
He sat on the long bench where he used to lie. At that moment, he smelled the thick scent of blood on himself.
He had left the Moton estate late at night, following dark, deserted paths back home, so no one had seen his blood-stained appearance.
The news of the Moton family's massacre had likely spread. Whether the cathedral could discover he was the killer through Wu Bi no longer mattered.
He stared at his blood-stained hands. Under the moonlight, his shadow cast on the ground looked like a demon.
A skull appeared beside the demon shadow, perched on its shoulder. The skull spoke: "What do you want to become now?"
Shang Xing was silent for a long time before saying: "I want to become a demon. Angels cannot save the world, but demons can." There was no need to beg Angels for salvation; one could only save oneself, even if it meant becoming a demon.
The Mima said: "That is indeed the case."
Shang Xing: "One cannot be weak, cannot cry. One must have power, must be covered in thorns to deal with this incurable world."
He lowered his eyes, the pungent smell of blood in his nose. Power and thorns came at the price of killing: "But I don't like myself like this."
"But I like you like this."
Shang Xing was startled. Bai Qi Wei stood before him, leaning over, repeating: "I like you like this. Having memories makes you more pained, and pained memories are even more delicious."
The Mima had disappeared, as if it had never existed.
Shang Xing didn't want to interact with Bai Qi Wei. His figure flashed, wanting to leave this house that no longer held any relatives. Bai Qi Wei flicked a finger, and Shang Xing felt like he was pulled by a magnet. His body moved toward Bai Qi Wei uncontrollably, finally stopping in front of him.
Bai Qi Wei obsessively sniffed his forehead, as if smelling an incredibly alluring fragrance. When he looked up, his eyes were hazy.
"Fortunately, I told Ian your location. Otherwise, your memories wouldn't be this painful," Bai Qi Wei said, pulling something like a blood vessel from his forehead.
As the "blood vessel" was pulled, his consciousness gradually became muddled. Those painful, blood-soaked memories of killing slowly faded, the details blurring until they finally became a complete blank.
In the final second before losing consciousness, he saw Bai Qi Wei devouring the "blood vessel," satisfying his gluttonous desire.
When he woke up again, he had lost all his memories. He didn't know who he was; he had forgotten everything.
He left the Rowle Kingdom and went to many other places, wandering for four years. Later, he entered the Lan Yao Empire and finally met Bai Qi Wei again. The memories of the past came flooding back; he recovered everything.

Shang Xing opened his eyes. Bai Qi Wei was staring at him expectantly: "Experiencing the most painful things again, your memories have indeed become as painful as they were when you were ten."
Bai Qi Wei pulled a red "blood vessel" from his forehead. This "blood vessel" was his memory.
