Chapter 23
I Am Afraid
He was an observer, seeing everything clearly and precisely.
In Xue's memory world, when Xue ventured into the mortal realm, and evil thoughts, like the whispers of demons, coiled around his ears, he could only hide alone in a dark corner, suppressing the malice and bloodlust within his heart.
But Xue, even after returning from the mortal realm, did not notice his change.
Xue heard Angel speak, and he replied earnestly, "You will not become a demon. I will not let you become a demon."
Angel looked up and smiled, "Thank you, Xue."
Xue stroked his hair, continuing forward. The two walked on and on, reaching the northernmost part of the A Van Education District. Here, a towering Gothic-style church stood majestically.
The church gates were wide open, and the sound of sermons echoed from within.
Angel asked, "Is this the church?"
Xue nodded.
Before the church gates stood a group of people in white robes. They held long spears, crescent blades, and various other weapons. Upon seeing Xue, they bowed respectfully.
Among them, a man wearing a cross on his chest stepped forward and said respectfully, "Please follow me, sir."
Xue nodded and followed him.
The man led the two to a magnificent and exquisite hall, an annex building of the church—the Divine Father Tower. They ascended to the second floor, passed through a long, winding corridor, and entered the room at its very end.
The man stopped: "The Saint is inside." Having said that, he retreated.
The door creaked open automatically.
Through the crack in the door, one could see an altar in the center of the room, above which stood a colossal Cross. The Cross was formed from two white skeletons, upon which many strange patterns were carved.
A woman was praying, facing the Cross. She knelt on the ground, her body trembling violently, seemingly enduring extreme pain, yet still striving to pray.
Xue entered, but Angel frowned, remaining at the door, unwilling to go in. Seeing this, Xue gave him an inquiring look. Angel said, "I am afraid."
Xue: "What are you afraid of?"
Angel honestly replied, "I am afraid of the Cross on the altar; it emits an intense light, a blinding radiance, as if it wants to swallow me whole."
At this moment, a clear voice came from behind Xue: "No one has ever feared the Cross of God, except for demons."
That person walked to the door, staring intently at Angel, who stood outside. That person had an angelic countenance, with icy blue eyes, different from Xue's clear, warm blue eyes. Long, flowing golden hair cascaded down; he was clearly an angel as cold as ice.
Xue frowned and called out to that person, "Tian Zhu, he is Angel, not a demon."
Tian Zhu's eyes locked onto Angel: "In the eyes of ordinary people, the Cross carries a gentle holy light. But in the eyes of demons, the Cross's radiance is too intense, making them feel as if they are being swallowed by the light. Tell me, are you a demon?"
Then, he looked at Xue and said, "One created from the root of all evil thoughts from the mortal realm and hell, like Angel, cannot be an angel; he will forever be a demon. You cannot turn a demon into an angel."
Angel's face turned pale, and he lowered his head. Xue approached Angel, stroking Angel's head with his right hand, and said to Tian Zhu, "Angel is not a demon now, not now, and not in the future either."
Tian Zhu snorted disdainfully: "Can you guarantee that Angel will not become a demon in the future?"
