Visiting the Patient and Boiled Eggs

After chatting for a few more words, Yu Li returned to the room to check on Fu Wenxiao. Having not seen him all day, she was worried he might suddenly stop breathing, in which case she would have no reason to stay with the Fu family anymore.

Yu Li entered the room and found only a single flickering oil lamp. Fu Wenxiao was leaning against the headboard, wearing a pale white sleeping robe, his hair slightly disheveled. His face was as pale as snow, but his features were as sharp and defined as a painting. Under the dim light, he possessed a mesmerizing yet cold beauty that commanded both admiration and wariness.

His demeanor remained incredibly aloof, like a white snow-capped mountain, extinguishing any stray thoughts in the minds of those who looked at him. Hearing footsteps, Fu Wenxiao slightly raised his eyes. His gaze was deep and quiet, as if capable of seeing through one's soul. Although his body was frail, those eyes were so calm that they made one forget his weakness and grow alert.

Yu Li approached the bed, pulled out a boiled egg, and handed it to him.

"For you to eat."

Fu Wenxiao looked at the egg in her hand, remained silent for a moment, and then said, "You eat it. I don't like eating them."

His voice was raspy yet pleasant, carrying a calmness that matched his current demeanor. Yu Li looked at him skeptically. How could anyone not like such a delicious thing?

She thought to herself that this man was either foolish or had a problem with his sense of taste. "It's very delicious. Are you sure you don't want to eat it?" she asked again. This was something she had specifically brought back, wanting to share it to express her gratitude for giving her a place to stay and food to eat.

Fu Wenxiao shook his head. At this moment, his body was too weak, and he had no appetite; he couldn't even swallow the most delicious food.

Seeing that he definitely wouldn't eat it, Yu Li happily peeled the egg, saying as she did, "I brought some back for everyone. Your mother, Yanhui, and Yansheng all got one. These boiled eggs are really delicious."

Having said that, she glanced at Fu Wenxiao, thinking to herself that it was just as well he didn't eat it, as she could have another one.

Fu Wenxiao felt a slight stir in his heart and asked with some effort, "Was your return home today smooth?" He added an apology, for his weak health prevented him from accompanying her back to her maiden home.

She had gone to the Yu family home in the morning, stayed there all day, and only returned after dark. Normally, staying at her maiden home for so long would suggest that her family loved her dearly; otherwise, they wouldn't have kept her for so long.

Fu Wenxiao had also heard Madame Chu speak of her identity and her circumstances in the Yu family, so he understood to some extent. Looking at her thin frame, he knew she didn't live well. Otherwise, the Yu family wouldn't have married her off to ward off ill luck.

No parent who loved their daughter would willingly marry her to a dying man just to ward off ill luck.

Yu Li didn't care much about him not being able to accompany her, only saying casually, "It's fine."

She carefully took a bite of the boiled egg, then added casually, "It was smooth!"

Very smooth!

So smooth that she even thought returning to the Yu family to eat every day would surely keep her full.

Recalling the evening meal of braised pork, chicken, and chicken soup, Yu Li lamented in her heart, "It's so good to be alive!" Only by being alive could one enjoy such delicious food.

The Yu family raised many chickens, over a dozen, enough to eat for a long time.

Unlike the Fu family, who only raised a few hens for eggs.

Fu Wenxiao's gaze never left her.

He watched intently as she took small bites, fearing that if she took too large a bite, the egg would be gone in an instant.

He could sense that she cherished food deeply; perhaps she rarely had the opportunity to eat eggs on normal days.

She truly fit the image of a farm girl who was treated harshly by her family.

After finishing, Yu Li carefully licked the remaining crumbs of egg yolk from her hand.

She raised her head, catching his gaze fixed intently on her.

"How are you today?" she asked, completely unbothered by him witnessing her actions.

To her, wasting food was shameful, let alone an egg so delicious; even a tiny bit of dropped yolk was a pity, so she absolutely had to eat every last bit.
