The Delicate Beauty and the Butcher

Peace and Quiet

Chapter 44

Peace and Quiet

Yu Li just stood there, blankly watching Lady Zhou wipe her tears. She could not understand this grief, because in the apocalyptic era she had lived through, death was an all-too-common occurrence.

As a genetic warrior, she was accustomed to not feeling death as deeply as others. However, she remained silent and said nothing more, out of respect for Lady Zhou's emotions.

...

At noon, Yu Li was served brown rice porridge with pickled vegetables and a bowl of green vegetables. These were simple, rustic dishes, very familiar to farming folk, with nothing special about their flavor.

But looking at Yu Li's expression while eating, even Lady Zhou couldn't help but wonder if the table was laid with delicacies from land and sea.

The two children were also swept up by her appetite, eating more than half a bowl of brown rice porridge and green vegetables, their bellies unbelievably round.

Lady Zhou could only blame the Yu family for not caring for her properly and not giving Yu Li enough to eat, so that now, even eating brown rice porridge and green vegetables felt like savoring a delicacy.

How pitiful indeed!

The entire day passed in such peace and quiet.

Yu Li was very satisfied with this kind of life.

What satisfied her most was that the Fu family was very generous, unlike the original host's memories of her time at the Yu family—where her food portions were always cut, having to eat worse than a cat, not allowed to sit at the same table as the men, but instead having to squat in the stifling kitchen to eat.

She was still in the recovery phase and needed nourishment to restore her health, so she had to eat more to regain her strength.

In the room, the sound of steady breathing echoed, making Yu Li feel extremely unaccustomed. Her instinct wanted to immediately choke that breathing sound.

She pinched her own hand, constantly reminding herself that she could not act rashly.

Fortunately, last night, because this body suffered from heatstroke and had no strength left, she had avoided a major mistake. Otherwise, she might not have been able to sit peacefully at the Fu family eating bean porridge today.

Currently, Yu Li still wanted to stay at the Fu family, even if it was just as a maid, but at least she had bean porridge, pickled vegetables, and vegetable soup to eat.

The food here was all natural, unpolluted, and non-artificial. Even though it was coarse food, it tasted much better than the artificial foods and compressed rations she used to eat.

Even when drinking plain water here, she felt it was a luxury.

Fortunately, her body was still weak. Although Yu Li was unaccustomed to it, she could not resist the fatigue and fell into a deep sleep along with that soft breathing sound.

It felt as though she had only just closed eyes when dawn arrived...

As soon as it was light, Yu Li woke up. She found her body still limp, without a shred of strength.

An uncomfortable sensation lingered within her, as if something was hiding in her body, trying to crawl out.

Her gaze gradually grew hazy, and it took her a long while to force herself up.

While washing her face, Yu Li noticed that the water jar was nearly empty.

She thought for a moment, remembering that in the countryside, if a house did not have a well, they had to go to the river to fetch water.

The Fu family did not have a well, so every day they had to go to the river to carry water back for cooking and daily life.
