Chapter 17
The Zhou Family Ghost Story
Before me was a desolate well, surrounded by overgrown grass, and a strong stench emanated from within.
At this moment, I regained my composure and walked towards the mouth of the well. The closer I got, the stronger the stench became, almost making the contents of my stomach surge out.
The mouth of the well was covered with dry grass. I used one hand to clear the dry grass aside, then approached to look inside. There was no water in the well, only a single large box. I used the strength of both my arms to pull the box up. After observing it for a long time, I realized that the patterns on this box were from the Song Dynasty, hundreds of years ago. But the strange thing was, why hadn't the box rotted? Although a bit old, it was still very durable.
I reached out to the box, intending to open it, but then I thought, this must be property of the Zhou Family; if I opened it without permission, wouldn't that be improper behavior? In the end, I decided to take the box back to the Zhou Family living room to return it to them.
As soon as I entered the door, Aunt Zhou rushed towards me, then looked me over. "Master Zhong, have you seen something unclean?"
I had indeed seen something, but I didn't want to tell Aunt Zhou, because I was afraid she would panic. So I decided to hide it: "I didn't see anything."
Aunt Zhou looked at me with suspicious eyes and asked, "Are you sure you didn't see anything?"
I nodded, then handed the box to Aunt Zhou. "This might belong to your ancestors."
Aunt Zhou took the box, then placed it on the table and slowly opened it. Inside the box was a piece of paper and a set of wedding attire. I moved closer to the box to look, and was instantly startled, trembling all over. This attire was very similar to the wedding attire of the girl I met in the room. At this moment, I was utterly terrified. I was very afraid that the wedding attire would suddenly bleed, and even more afraid that the little girl would reappear.
Having practiced this profession for so many years, I could only set up altars and perform rituals to calm others, but I had never witnessed such a ghostly situation. I admit I am a charlatan, but I never intentionally deceived anyone. Each time after setting up an altar, I would, according to Grandfather's words, give the family head a talisman, which, according to Grandfather, was a peace talisman. But the strange thing was that each time, they would come to my house to offer gifts and praise me as a highly skilled Exorcist. Thus, I became arrogant and took on many spiritual cases, but this time I had definitely come to the wrong place. This was probably my retribution.
Aunt Zhou handed the paper to me and said, "Master Zhong, please read this for me; my eyes are a bit blurry."
I received the paper with both hands and read:
"Today, at the beginning of summer, the sky is gloomy, and I take out my wedding attire to sew. I pour all my true feelings into every stitch. Yao Lang, I truly believe you will take me as your wife...
Winter Solstice. Yao Lang, today I feel something is wrong; it seems a bad omen is about to befall me...
Beginning of Summer. The wedding attire is stained with fresh blood, the white of mourning covers the story. I wonder if it was my intention or your indifference; the wedding attire I wear becomes the Yin Yang Bride..."
Reading this far, I truly couldn't understand the meaning of the girl's letter at the second Beginning of Summer. "Yin Yang Bride"? I pondered for a long time. At this moment, I was suddenly startled by Aunt Zhou's voice: "Master Zhong, do you understand the meaning of 'Yin Yang Bride'?"
I shook my head. Aunt Zhou sighed, looking into the distance, surely still worried about her son. I truly couldn't think of a way to help her. The only thing I could do now was to offer Aunt Zhou a cup of tea: "Auntie, don't worry, I will try my best to help your family. But today I must ask Grandfather about this matter. Can I make an appointment for tomorrow, Auntie?"
Aunt Zhou took the teacup and took a sip. "I hope you will try your best to help us."
I nodded and then bid farewell to Aunt Zhou.
Returning home and entering the door, I saw that Grandfather had already prepared dinner. Today I was too tired from the ghostly affairs at the Zhou Family, so I hadn't eaten anything since morning. As soon as I saw the lavish dinner table, I rushed to eat ravenously. Grandfather came out of the kitchen, smiling at me: "Look at you, are you that hungry?"
I didn't answer him, just nodded. He placed a plate of food on the table and put a chicken wing into my bowl: "Eat a lot, how was work today?"
I swallowed a mouthful of food, then stopped my chopsticks and looked at him: "That's right, Grandfather, do you know about the 'Yin Yang Bride'?"
Grandfather stopped his chopsticks, his eyes looking at me in panic, which scared me just as much: "How do you know about the Yin Yang Bride? Whose house did you visit today?"
I replied with a trembling voice, because Grandfather was a highly skilled Exorcist; he had always been calm when hearing any ghost stories, showing no fear. But today, when the "Yin Yang Bride" was mentioned, Grandfather's face changed color. It seemed this was no small matter: "I went to the Zhou Family's house."
Grandfather put down his rice bowl and walked closer to me: "What did you encounter?"
I recounted the strange events that had happened that afternoon. After listening, Grandfather looked towards the window, his fearful expression turning to one of deep contemplation. After a moment, he said, "So soon?"
At this moment, I was so scared that I sprang up from my chair, looking at Grandfather with trembling eyes: "Do you know them?"
He shook his head, then said sternly, "No acquaintance."
At this moment, I felt as if a cold wind blew into my ears, and I instinctively shivered. At this moment, I felt as if my soul was gradually separating from my body; I didn't know what was happening. The house suddenly darkened, so dark that when I extended my hand, I couldn't even see my own hand. I turned to call Grandfather, but heard no reply from him. In the dark night, I heard my own voice. It was precisely a conversation between two people.
- Grandfather, what year is this?
- It's 1983 of the Republic.
- Has it been that long?
- Yes, it has been a long time.
- Does she still hate me, still want to seek revenge on me?
- She still hasn't given up on avenging herself on you.
- Grandfather, I cannot keep hiding in Zhong Chu Ling's body like this.
- I will think of a way to help you borrow a corpse to revive your soul. For now, stay inside his body, because his Yang Qi is very strong, which can help you avoid her clutches.
- I only fear that his Yang Qi will gradually weaken because of me.
At this moment, I was completely immersed in endless darkness. I clearly heard my Grandfather's sigh, but who was talking to him? Why was my name mentioned in the conversation?
After a while of being deeply immersed in the darkness, I almost fainted from feeling suffocated.
